@Tiare_MP IIRC something similar happened during the coalition during World War Two in the UK, with a Labour MP being leader of the opposition, while leader of the Labour Party Clement Attlee was Deputy Prime Minister (with Conservative Winston Churchill as PM).
🗣️Our GM Policy Hub seminar on decarbonising domestic heating is underway! @UoMPolicy co-director and event chair Professor Maria Sharmina welcomes attendees and introduces the seminar topic @UoMSciEng@greatermcr
@PARLYapp Would this lead to more regular opportunities for the independents to contribute to Parliamentary debate? e.g. speaker Bercow would give the leaders of each of the small parties one Q per month at PMQs, and when UKIP had MPs they got a formal right of reply at the budget.
Really proud to be launching our new Catering for Everyone report which calls on all public sector institutions - schools, hospitals, councils - to provide at least one vegan option on menus at all times. Find out more below ⬇️
Breaking news! Our landmark report, based on Freedom of Information requests, sheds light on which UK councils are (and those that aren’t) providing vegan options and prioritising sustainability in their catering decisions.

@helena_bennett_ Why does it have to be one or the other? We need to reduce or ideally eliminate both sets of emissions if we’re going to get to net-zero.
NEW: 85 people in Arizona suffered severe burns from contact with pavements heated up to 180F (82C). 7 of them died. In total, 257 people had underlying cause of death listed as "exposure to excessive natural heat".
This is not a forecast for 50 years time, it’s happening today.
@thomasforth I used to work in this policy area. Basically we can’t replace conventional cars with EVs 1:1 because of supply chain issues and powering all those EVs would put a Herculean strain on the electricity grid and on deploying renewables. EVs are part of the answer but not a panacea.
@hankgreen This is somewhat my area. Im v sceptical of geo-engineering. Info I’ve seen suggests it would negatively impact maybe even worse than climate change itself (esp the Global South). We should focus on deploying existing tech like wind + solar energy & electrifying the economy, etc.
No party can claim to be credible on climate change while opening up new oil & gas fields. This announcement from Labour should be welcomed, & they should be encouraged to stand up to the usual suspects who want to delay our transition to a sustainable planet.
NEW: 139 orgs including the RSPB, Women's Institute and the CPRE have written to Labour in support of their plan to ban new oil & gas projects.
Labour must now outline a clear path to support workers transition from fossil fuels to good, green jobs.

@yuanyi_z The earliest reference listed in Erskine May is from 2008, with Speaker Martin ‘repeating’ his determination for statements to be made in the house first. I imagine the convention is older than that but I genuinely have no idea how old. https://t.co/64510bcEnK
@youngvulgarian Would you say this argument also applies to why Mastodon has been less successful than it could be? ie a website with lots of social progressives but few conservatives/reactionaries is going to have challenges because there’s no conflict driving engagement?
@Rachel_Macrorie When I was house hunting right after the house market opened up post lockdown you basically had to put in an offer to even get a viewing, based only on photos and a blurb.
