Elon Musk’s products—Starlink, Tesla, the rockets he launches—receive government contracts all over the world because they’re the best at what they do. The competition is far behind.

You wouldn’t go for second best if you want the best wireless internet and the next best thing is ten times slower and ten times more unreliable. You wouldn’t opt for the ESA or NASA or any number of startups to launch satellites when SpaceX does it for many times less and carries a heavier payload on regular schedules.

Unlike others, Elon’s products don’t get picked because he lobbies governments to give his companies the contracts. You wouldn’t go for a trainee fresh out of boot camp if you’re looking for a hardened warrior to take out Osama Bin Laden, so why would any government or corporation go for the alternatives?

Trump’s criticism about saving money by cutting Elon’s contracts is totally out of bounds, and it’s out of touch. By denying him the contracts, the US government is going to end up spending many times the amount of money on products that won’t even deliver what they need, if they even deliver at all.
