Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen understood spiritual realities well, which is why he spoke and wrote so insightfully on the demonic.

Sheen especially hones in on the devil’s hatred of the cross, the Mass, and eucharistic adoration, the great fruit of the Mass.

For instance, Sheen credited the power of his priesthood to his daily holy hour before our eucharistic Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, a discipline he maintained for sixty-plus years. Whereas priests and laymen may doubt, Sheen notes, the devil does not, which is why his most infernal act is called the Black Mass. “A consecrated host is absolutely essential for a black Mass,” says Sheen:

"We may be lax in our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, but Satan is not. Scripture tells us Satan believes [James 2:19]. Satan believes in God, in the divinity of Christ, in the Eucharist, in the Church, and yet believing, he would destroy. This is why we pray the holy hour."

It’s Sunday. It’s raining.

Go to Mass anyway.

Because today’s readings could not be more fitting.

“Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near.”

Think about that.

We spend so much of our lives assuming there will always be another Sunday.

Another chance to pray.

Another chance to come back.

Another chance to take God seriously.

And then Jesus tells us about the workers standing idle in the marketplace while the landowner keeps returning to call them into his vineyard.

Some came early.

Some came late.

But they still had to answer the call.

Maybe that is the message some of us need this morning.

Stop standing there.

Stop waiting until life settles down.

Stop waiting until your faith feels stronger.

Stop waiting for better weather.

God is calling you now.

So grab the umbrella. Let your shoes get wet. Walk through those church doors, genuflect before the tabernacle, kneel down and remember Who you came to see.

The rain will stop.

This Sunday will never come again.

And when God calls you into the vineyard, the only answer that matters is whether you went.

As the Catholic Church in Malawi prepares to mark 125 years since its permanent establishment in the country, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, the Special Delegate of the Holy See for the jubilee celebrations, has urged the Clergy and Religious to embrace the missionary identity of every Christian through detachment, encounter and sacrifice.

The official of the Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization, delivered the message on Friday, September 18, when he met representatives of the Clergy and Religious at the offices of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) in Lilongwe.

The meeting came a day after the Nigerian-born Archbishop arrived in Malawi to represent the Holy See during celebrations marking the 125th anniversary of the permanent establishment of the Catholic Church in the country.

Friends, we’ve all seen the statistics that say people are increasingly bored, frustrated, and anxious.

Why is that the case?

Fulton Sheen observed one reason in his times that I believe continues to ring true: many people lack a spiritual goal and “tend to change philosophies with every book they read—now Marx, now Freud, now materialism, now idealism.”

We are meant to realize the deepest longing of our souls, to order our lives to God.

This is what gives “a thrill and romance to life.”

Bishop Vicente Sanombo of Angola’s Catholic Diocese of Kwito-Bié has urged Christians to put the Word of God at the service of human dignity, justice and peace, underscoring the need for a lived faith that responds to the concrete realities facing African communities.

Speaking to Radio Ecclesia on Tuesday, September 15, ahead of the Third International Biblical Symposium, scheduled for September 17–19, Bishop Sanombo said biblical reflection should be closely connected to the experiences and challenges of the people whom the Church serves.
