More Than 200 JNIM Fighters Killed in Niger State

The convenient generalisation and broad use of labels such as “bandits” and “terrorists” – often without distinguishing between the various armed actors operating across Northwest and Northcentral Nigeria – means that significant successes and developments can pass largely unnoticed.

One such example occurred over the weekend in Niger State, where more than 200 fighters linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) were killed in an ambush by Nigerian security forces, supported by vigilantes.

What is particularly striking is that the sheer scale of the reported casualties generated relatively limited national attention, public curiosity, or broader discussion about the implications of the operation. This is despite the fact that over 200 fighters were neutralised in a single day, even though the wider operation reportedly began several days earlier.

The incident once again highlights the growing complexity of insecurity in Northwest and Northcentral Nigeria. The multiplicity of actors operating across these regions – bandit factions, jihadist groups, local militias, and transnational networks – increasingly makes attribution difficult, even for security actors themselves. In many cases, attacks are simply attributed to “bandits” or “terrorists” without deeper analysis of who the actors actually are, their affiliations, or their strategic objectives.

So, what happened in Niger? Sources said hundreds of JNIM fighters had travelled from Kwara State to the Borgu forest in Niger State for a meeting with a senior JNIM leader believed to have arrived from Mali. Some fighters also crossed into Nigeria for the meeting from Malanville in Benin Republic through Kamba in Kebbi State.

The meeting reportedly took place late Friday into the early hours of Saturday. As the fighters headed back toward Kwara, security forces, possibly acting on intelligence and supported by local vigilantes, laid an ambush.

Among those believed to have survived the operation was Amir Akibu Armiya’u, JNIM’s leader in Nigeria.

This incident reinforces growing concerns about JNIM’s long-term expansionist ambitions toward Northwest and Northcentral Nigeria. However, Nigeria presents a far more complicated operational environment for the group. The scale, structure, resources and reach of the Nigerian military make it unlikely that JNIM will enjoy the level of territorial freedom it currently exploits in parts of the Sahel.

That said, vulnerable rural communities may increasingly find themselves at the receiving end of the group’s incursionary attacks, recruitment efforts, and attempts at local infiltration unless sustained and coordinated efforts are undertaken to disrupt its networks before they become deeply entrenched.

The broader concern is that Northwest and Northcentral Nigeria are gradually evolving into a convergence zone where local criminal economies, cross-border militant movements, and transnational jihadist ambitions increasingly overlap. Failure to properly distinguish between these actors risks undermining both public understanding and strategic response.

NAF SUSTAINED AIR STRIKES TRIGGER TERRORIST APPREHENSION IN BORNO STATE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, has sustained its aggressive counter-terrorism air campaign in Borno State, delivering decisive strikes against terrorist strongholds and logistics enclaves within the Sambisa Forest axis. Following credible Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance reports, NAF air assets on 26 May 2026 executed precision strikes on identified terrorist hideouts and support structures at Biramiri in the Gezuwa general area of Borno State. The coordinated attacks destroyed key terrorist facilities and neutralised several fighters, further crippling the operational capacity of the insurgents.

The intensity and precision of the ongoing air offensives have continued to generate fear and confusion among terrorist elements across the Sambisa axis. Intelligence assessments indicate growing apprehension and disorientation within the ranks of the terrorists as sustained bombardments deny them freedom of movement and safe havens. The NAF, in concert with troops of Operation HADIN KAI and other security agencies, remains resolute in maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist networks while reinforcing its commitment to protecting innocent lives and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-East.

NAF DECIMATES TERRORIST STRONGHOLDS IN SOUTHERN TUMBUNS, MANDARA MOUNTAINS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, intensified ongoing air offensives against terrorist elements in the North-East with precision air strikes conducted on 19 May 2026 at Bukar Meram in the Southern Tumbuns and Chikide in the Mandara Mountains. Acting on credible intelligence and confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, NAF air assets destroyed terrorist logistics hubs, structures and assembly areas concealed within the enclaves, while also neutralising several terrorists and disrupting planned attacks.

Speaking on the operations, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to sustaining coordinated joint operations with sister Services and allied partners to eliminate terrorism and restore peace across the country. The CAS stressed that intelligence-driven air operations would continue to identify and destroy terrorist hideouts, logistics networks and operational bases wherever they exist.

UPDATE ON NIGERIA- UNITED STATES JOINT STRIKES ON ISIS: FORCES DELIVER DEVASTATING BLOW, ELIMINATE 175 TERRORISTS

The Defence Headquarters wishes to announce major successes in continuing counterterrorism operations in close coordination with United States Africa Command against ISIS terrorists in North East Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the joint strikes started a few days ago. As of 19 May 2026, assessments indicate that 175 ISIS terrorists have been eliminated from the battlefield.

The joint strikes have resulted in the destruction of ISIS checkpoints, weapons caches, logistical hubs, military equipment and financial networks used to sustain terrorist operations.

The operations have also resulted in the elimination of several senior ISIS leaders, including Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, one of the most significant ISIS operatives in the world.

Al-Minuki played a central role in ISIS external operations, coordinating terrorist financing, recruitment, logistics and attack planning targeting Nigerians and innocent civilians around the world. His death severely disrupts ISIS command, operational coordination and external attack networks.

Other terrorist figures eliminated include Abd-al Wahhab, ISWAP senior leader responsible for coordinating attacks and distributing propaganda, Abu Musa al-Mangawi, ISWAP senior member and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, ISWAP senior media production team manager and close confidant to al-Minuki.

The joint strikes have further reinforced what the Armed Forces of Nigeria have consistently done over the years - hunt down and kill terrorists anywhere they are in Nigeria.

The joint operations will continue to hunt down and destroy those who threaten our nation and regional stability.

COORDINATED STRIKES AND TARGETING OF ISIS TERRORISTS CONTINUE

The Defence Headquarters, in close coordination with United States Africa Command, wish to update the general public on the continuation of coordinated operations against ISIS militants across the North East Nigeria, with additional air strike operations successfully executed in the general area of Metele.

Following observed convergence and migration of terrorist elements, multiple air strikes were conducted resulting in the elimination of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters. The ongoing operations follow the neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and are part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks, remove them from the battlefield and deny the terrorists any safe haven within Nigeria.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation. Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated.

There will be no safe haven for all terrorists anywhere in Nigeria.

Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State.

Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin
