May 19 is the commemoration day of Pontic Greek Genocide.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Greeks constituted the majority in the northern and western regions of Asia Minor, as well as in some provinces of Cappadocia. Similar to the Armenians, the Greeks were the indigenous population of these areas and resisted attempts at forced assimilation and Turkification.

Turkey feared losing control over Anatolia and Pontus, as it had already experienced with Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria.

In March 1915, the Young Turks perpetrated massacres of Greeks who had been conscripted into the Turkish army in the city of Smyrna and the Black Sea coastal region of Pontus.

On May 19, 1919, Turkish troops led by Mustafa Kemal entered the city of Samsoun, marking the beginning of the second wave of massacres against the Pontic Greeks. These atrocities were part of the genocidal campaign against the Christian population of the Ottoman Empire initiated by the Young Turks' government in 1915.

On September 9, 1920, Turkish troops invaded Smyrna and began massacring Greek and Armenian civilians while looting their property.

On September 13, a massive fire, believed to be the work of the Kemalists, engulfed the city. The fire resulted in the destruction of more than 50,000 houses, 24 churches, 28 schools, as well as banks, consulates, and hospitals. The estimated death toll ranges from 60,000 to 260,000. Additionally, around 160,000 men were forcibly displaced deep into Anatolia, with many perishing during the journey.

Between 1916 and 1923, out of the 700,000 Greeks residing in Pontus, approximately 353,000 were murdered by the Turks, while others migrated to Greece, Armenia, and other regions. The Turkish barbarians exterminated 50 percent of the Greeks living in Pontus.

On March 24, 2015, the Armenian Parliament unanimously adopted a statement condemning the genocide of Greeks and Assyrians in the Ottoman Empire. The statement received unanimous approval from 117 deputies.
