Through engaging with other professionals in my field I have been able to discover so much useful information on how I'll be able to make my future classroom #sustainable and how to be a good role model for my students! #UoNTeach
@Maddi_Flint Couldn't agree more! Starting this unit of work has really opened my eyes to the damaging effects single use plastics are having on our environment. I have started making small steps to living a more sustainable lifestyle and I hope to encourage my future students to do the same!
Upon starting this unit of work I was unaware just how useful it could be to engage through social media, with other professionals in your field. Interacting with others through social media has opened up a wealth of valuable resources and information. #UoNTeach
@Aaron97UON While I agree that not enough is currently being done to reduce the footprint schools leave on the environment, I do think they're taking small steps in the right direction. If they continue this way schools have the potential to become beacons of good practice in #sustainability
@samfosterr97 While it may seem like it will only make a small difference, switching from using plastic straws to cardboard straws is the first of many small steps to saving our environment! This strategy, along with many others, could be implemented in to the school environment!
@Aaron97UON I think these would be a great addition to any school environment! The design is sleek and fitting for a school! It would also be a great tool to educate students on sustainable living within an urban environment.
Up to 50% of the rubbish put in mixed waste garbage bins is organic material such as food waste! This takes up large amounts of space in landfill and contributes to greenhouse gases! A school compost bin is a great way to educate students and help improve our environment!
@gabcorrey1 This is such an important topic that students truly do need to be educated on! On top of just teaching them in the classroom it would be fantastic to see schools help tackle this problem by introducing cardboard straws or even promoting the use of metal straws!
@JordanM63755403 This is fantastic to see! Another way I have seen food scraps being put to good use is through a school compost bin. Each classroom would have a separate bin for food scraps and at the end of the day it would be emptied in to one of schools compost bins!
Are electric cars the way of the future? This is a great video that discusses the use of electric cars in Australia, it could be a great way to introduce students to the concept of renewable and non-renewable energy sources!

@MitchellJSalter On my most recent Professional Experience the classroom teacher set a challenge to all students, no plastic in their lunchbox for a week! This was a great way of encouraging students to use materials other than plastic.
This is a fantastic resource that can be hung in any classroom to educate students on reducing their carbon footprint and promote #sustainability!
What other ways could you decorate the classroom to promote a sustainable future?

This is a fun interactive quiz students can take to calculate how big their ecological footprint is and how many planets we would need if everybody lived their lifestyle.

@KeelanAmee What a great way to educate students on sustainable living and teach them valuable life skills! This would be a brilliant program to be implemented across schools with just so many benefits!
Bringing in a guest speaker is a great way to expose students to real-world life experiences. These lucky students had the opportunity to hear all about recycling and waste from an employee from the city council! #sustainability#UoNTeach
@GreenSchoolsIre@BunscoilSynge Thanks to Audrey from Dublin City Council for talking to our pupils today about recycling and waste..the children made hats, played games and watched videos - a really informative day! Great to see parents there too! #greenflag#syngestreet
@MitchellJSalter It's incredibly difficult for young students to fully understand the scope of damage waste is doing to our environment. This is one of the reasons I believe we should be constructing engaging and informative lessons on sustainability.
Did you know dried up markers can be used to create watercolours? This is a great way to illustrate the definition of recycling and show that what we might think of as rubbish can often be repurposed. #sustainability#UoNTeach

@MitchellJSalter It is unfortunately much more difficult to incorporate a program like this in to rural schools. However there are always changes that could be made such as getting dropped close to the school and walking a portion of the way!
Walk Safely to School Day is a little over a month away. This is a great way to encourage students to get physical activity and promote a #sustainable Australia #UonNTeach
