@Maddi_Flint Agreed! I am certainly more aware about #sustainability now than I was prior to this unit. Starting small with turning the tap off whilst I brush my teeth & using reusable bags when shopping! Hopefully I’ll take this viewpoint into my future classrooms. #UONTeach#Sustainability
Throughout the planning of a recent unit of work based around #sustainability I have used Twitter to #engage in professional discussion with fellow teachers. I have been astounded by the amount of resources that are at the reach of my fingertips. Keen to continue! #UONTeach
Walk Safely to School Day is just over a week away. Of course this day relates directly to road safety, but it also ties in with sustainable transport. What are some things that we can do in the classroom to promote #SustainableTransport as well as #RoadSafety? #UONTeach
Twitter has certainly opened my eyes to the amount of things that can be in our classrooms to promote recycling and reduce the amount of plastic we use. I look forward to implementing these into my future classroom & school settings! #UONTeach#SustainableClassrooms
@LukeEthanHowe This is such a great idea Luke! Another way I have seen food waste being put to good use is through starting a school farm and feeding the scraps to some of the animals.
The #WindTree is an alternative to wind turbines. They can be placed much closer to what they are powering due to their reduced size. They are also silent and much more aesthetic. Could these devices be seen in schools in the future? #UONTeach#Sustainability
Whilst creating my unit of work I have investigated aspects of #sustainability that I had not previously delved in. Upon reflection, I do not believe enough is currently being done in schools to reduce the footprint we leave on the environment. What does everyone think? #UONTeach
An alarming statistic... I believe this problem stems from a lack of awareness about the amount of plastic that is not being recycled. How can we as teachers change this? Particularly for students or even parents/carers who are in rural/remote areas? #UONTeach#Sustainability
ONE MILLION plastic bottles are bought EVERY MINUTE around the world — and that number will top half a TRILLION by 2021. Less than half of those bottles end up getting recycled.
What happens to the rest?

@MitchellJSalter I think hands-on activities are especially important for a topic like sustainability. Possibly students investigating the amount of water they use daily. This would provide a real-life example, making it easier for them to get an idea of how much water they use!
@MitchellJSalter A short and powerful way of getting the message across, this could easily be transferred onto posters and hung up in classrooms and around schools - students could even create these posters as a part of a lesson!
@MitchellJSalter Huge! I am guilty of this at times.. I never realised just how much water I was wasting. Perhaps teachers could suggest the use of antibacterial hand sanitisers before students use taps to wash their hands.
@HovingtonMadde@naidocweek Of course there are the classic art and cooking activities. However, I personally do not remember gaining a deep understanding from these whilst I was in school... it was just another school activity. Do you have any ideas for more meaningful activities?
The ‘Sustainable Schools NSW’ website offers some great ideas for in-school projects based on sustainability. What are some other, less common, ones that people have seen in schools? #UONTeach#Sustainability
@kehaniw1 Handy tip! A student & I noticed 3-4 struggling bees at school a few weeks ago & weren’t sure what the problem was. Wish I knew this info then! Will definitely give this a crack after the holidays as we have a large bee population at our school. #UONTeach#ForTheEnvironment
@LukeEthanHowe Awesome, I didn’t know this was possible. I feel this type of recycling could also be tied into a STEM topic/unit. Using ‘rubbish’ as a tool! #Sustainability#STEM#UONTeach
Interesting read. What is everyone’s thoughts? Should we spend as much time as needed at the beginning of the year teaching our students how to work independently & without constant teacher instruction? Or is this wasted time that should be spent teaching the KLA’s? #UONTeach
Last night I began watching David Attenborough‘s series “Our Planet”. I was astounded at the diversity of wildlife, and shocked at the possibility of this wildlife being destroyed through human choices. Could series’ like these be used in the classroom? #UONTeach#Sustainability
