The June 2026 issue is officially out now. While we're usually very excited and proud to show off each new issue, this edition is also very sad for us. A few months ago we lost our founder, our publisher, our mentor, and our friend. In this issue, we're presenting what we hope is a fitting and respectful tribute to Barry Mano, a man who meant so much to so many of us in the officiating community. We hope you enjoy this edition - Peace.

Why did state associations like us begin forming 100+ years ago?
To prioritize education. To keep competition balanced. To promote player protection.
And it is our honor to #ProtectThePurpose of high school sports to this day.

As an AD, I’ve attended a lot of sporting events over time, and one pattern I’ve consistently observed is that the less talented team or the underdog often has coaches and fans who ride the officials the hardest. I remind our coaches that constantly working the officials rarely helps the cause. Instead, pick and choose the moments that matter. When you build a level of respect and a working relationship with officials, they are far more likely to listen in key situations. At the end of the day, officials don’t lose games, lack of execution does.
Funny story from my dad’s fast pitch softball days: Allegedly—my mom was watching one of his games—she kicked a light pole after someone made an error in the field. Supposedly the lights went out and they had to wait 20 minutes for them to come back on. Fact? Or fiction? 🤷♂️
The lights just went out at Twin Valley…literally.
Scoreboard is on, but the lights are out 🤷♂️
Daniel Boone is leading 8-3 in the top of the 5th inning.
In over 25 years of covering sports, I don’t remember this happening before.

As an AD, I remind our athletes: no one cares how fast you are if you’re running the wrong way. No one cares about your velo if you can’t throw strikes. No one cares if you can draw a foul if you can’t make free throws. If you can’t do the basics, you won’t be effective.
