Oh dear. Andy Burhnam's going to be on a steep learning curve if he thinks the existing £39bn could be rediverted to "the biggest programme of council housebuilding since the Second World War”.
- The £39bn (over 10y) would fund around 20,000/yr
- In 1954, we built 198,210
Extraordinary that if a couple moves in together to save money on rent/get some privacy from housemates, the government wants to treat them more like a married couple.
A straightforward marriage is a cheap and easy thing to do. Don’t know what problem they think they’re solving.
3.5 million unmarried couples living together in the UK stand to gain stronger protections under Labour.
Too many couples have limited rights if their relationship ends or their partner dies - even after years together or raising children.
Labour is consulting on reforms to improve financial security, strengthen protections for survivors of domestic abuse and create a fairer system that reflects modern relationships.
The Soho Society is a registered charity and receives £10k/year from government grants. Why is taxpayer money being funnelled to groups who make places worse? This just goes to show that the third sector intervenes in every possible walk of life you can think of. Break the Blob!
The Soho Society is objecting to *every* new bar/restaurant licence in what is supposed to be the centre of London’s nightlife. More planning/licensing insanity.
I asked them to come on my Sunday LBC show: "We will absolutely not be taking questions from journalists". Of course not.

Once again pointing out that the public have been told for decades that we have a ‘points based system’ & only accept the best and brightest. So when they encounter someone that can’t speak English, or driving on the wrong side of the road, they presume they must be illegal
“Argentina was once as rich as Germany and richer than France. It isn’t anymore.”
In a generally excellent essay this is the most important line. Everybody expects Britain to muddle through no matter how poor our leaders are. There is no - zero - reason to believe this is true.
Explain to me why you should be able to inherit a £3 million tenancy without paying inheritance tax but not a £3 million house your parents actually bought and paid for.
Good on David Lammy for wearing the wig and walking backwards from the King after handing him the speech.
Two Kings Speech traditions that haven’t always been upheld in recent years.
'80% of Labour voters want a “customs union” with the EU.
However polling for Queen Mary University London has found only 9% of Labour voters think UK tariff policy should be decided by someone other than the UK govt...exactly what a customs union with the EU would entail.'
Look into his eyes, he knows he’s a fraud. No noble countenance, no strength or certainty. He looks oddly scared. An upstart really needs to convey something more impressive.
@bswud@flotron84 It wouldn’t be unprecedented if they had made it go to the tenant: not sending the prescribed information pack in 28 days (I think) already entitles tenants to up to 3x value of the deposit, not having an HMO license entitles tents to up to 12 months rent repayment order.
.@POTUS: "Honoring the British King might seem an ironic beginning to our celebration of 250 years of American independence — but in fact, no tribute could be more appropriate. Long before Americans had a nation or Constitution, we first had a culture, a character, and a creed. Before we ever proclaimed our independence, Americans carried within us the rarest of gifts: moral courage, and it came from a small but mighty kingdom from across the sea."
