The Prince Edward County OPP’s “Officer in the Branch” initiative, in partnership with local banks, has now wrapped up with a visit to the Scotiabank branch in Picton.

The sessions provided awareness on a range of scams, including gift card frauds, grandparent scams and phishing attempts. Hosting these discussions in a familiar banking environment helped foster open dialogue and allowed residents to speak one on one with an OPP officer about fraud prevention, current scam trends and ways to protect themselves and their finances. Clients openly shared their experiences, learned from one another and asked questions, helping to strengthen fraud awareness and prevention within the community. L'initiative « Officer in the Branch » (Un agent dans l'agence) de l'OPP du comté de Prince Edward, menée en partenariat avec les banques locales, s'est achevée par une visite à l'agence de la Banque Scotia à Picton.
Ces séances ont permis de sensibiliser le public à toute une série d'escroqueries, notamment les fraudes aux cartes-cadeaux, les escroqueries aux grands-parents et les tentatives d'hameçonnage.
Le fait d’organiser ces discussions dans un environnement bancaire familier a favorisé un dialogue ouvert et a permis aux résidents de s’entretenir en tête-à-tête avec un agent de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario au sujet de la prévention de la fraude, des tendances actuelles en matière d’escroquerie et des moyens de se protéger et de protéger leurs finances. Les clients ont ouvertement partagé leurs expériences, ont appris les uns des autres et ont posé des questions, contribuant ainsi à renforcer la sensibilisation et la prévention de la fraude au sein de la communauté. Mars est le Mois de la prévention de la fraude, mais restez vigilants face aux escroqueries tout au long de l’année. @TheRyanP74 @OPP_News Ontario did ban door-to-door sales in 2018 for most HVAC appliances. But fraudsters can exploit loopholes by selling products not on the banned list (e.g., smart home appliances)

Over 200 Ontarians fell victim to a door-to-door sales #scam, resulting in three Canada-wide warrants issued and two arrests made by the #SeriousFraudOfficeON.

These scams targeted older and vulnerable people, who unknowingly entered into home service and/or renovation agreements believing they were getting services for free through government grants or rebates. The accused then used the fake agreements to register Notice of Security Interests, which are similar to liens, against victims’ homes without their knowledge.

Three Canada-wide arrest warrants have been issued for 23-year-old Anas AYYOUB of Toronto, 33-year-old Muhammad Waqar AFZAL of Pickering, and 28-year-old Muhammad Wasiq AFZAL of Scarborough.
