Exactly 5 years ago, when I was 15 years old, I climbed into a holding pen at the Cal Poly slaughterhouse and plead for Dana’s life. She was to be killed as part of a slaughter class. She was shaking in fear, but after spending time with her I was able to gain her trust. Unfortunately, the police came and forced me to leave. I regretted not fighting harder for Dana, I wished I could have done more. So, the next week I went back and chained myself to the slaughterhouse gate to prevent the slaughter of a cow we named Justice. Today, there is now a huge, high security fence surrounding the slaughterhouse that was built in response to my protests.

The Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, which will end the export of cows, horses, sheep, goats and pigs for fattening or slaughter, has major flaws as all large animals can still be exported for breeding purposes, and no birds are protected, meaning around 96% won’t be protected.
