A week ago I spoke at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Engineering because a third-year mechanical engineering student, Mogomotsi Moeletsi, reached out on LinkedIn and asked me to come.

He chairs the SAIMechE student chapter. He was not a dean or a vice-chancellor. He simply had the courage to ask.

The university opened the session. Students from Stellenbosch, UCT and CPUT filled the lecture theatre. I came to talk about a national utility. What I found was something larger than a lecture.

Courage is a muscle. Build it early.
