Breaking News!
In the latest data, for April 23rd, a new modern-day record was set for Tropical 2-meter surface temperatures, at 26.93°C.
For reference, the baseline for the first 50 years of data, from 1940 to 1989, is the black line. April 23rd was 5.72σ above that baseline.
We absolutely must stop pollution at source and turn off the plastic tap.
Help us call for an ambitious #PlasticsTreaty that reduces production by at least 75% by 2040.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
"This is a *huge* amount of extra energy being transferred to the atmosphere. Expect extreme temperatures and storm records (again). Just the top few metres of our oceans store as much energy as the entirety of our atmosphere."

Start the new year by sorting out your lab’s cold storage, to simplify purchasing, improve experiment planning and reduce the frequency of lost samples https://t.co/E9tFhOWmvE
If this doesn't scare you...
According to data from ERA5, @ECMWF fifth generation reanalysis of the global climate from 1940 to the present, 17 November 2023 was the first day in which the global temperature exceeded 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Funders, like UKRI, Wellcome, DFG and SFI, are beginning to implement measures to promote sustainability in labs (links below). Since we are not familiar with the entire funding landscape in Europe and beyond - do you know of any other funders that are leading the way?
Did a Q&A for @MolecularCell on the background of creating LEAF, incentives in sustainable science, and green labs generally. Check it out here, or check the link below for more interviews from around the sector!

If you are on the fence about becoming a climate activist please, please, please come down onto the right side of history. The movement, and the planet, need you so incredibly much. You are more powerful than you can ever know. Every activist started out as someone on that fence.
Carbon taxes focused on luxury consumption are more economically fair than carbon taxes that tax all forms of consumption equally, analysis shows. @yl_oswald

This #BiodiversityDay, a reminder that our colourful world is fading to grey.
The #LPR2022 reveals an average 69% decline in wildlife populations since 1970.
We’re in a race to bring our world back to life. With your support, it's a race we can still win.

📣 📣 📣 The shock of my day:
Over the last few days, I measured power consumption of our -80°C freezers @CECAD_ .
~13 kWh per day each
🤔So, one freezer consumes much more electricity per year than my family and me🙁
@R_Amadio@My_Green_Lab For each ULT freezer, switching to -70 saves as much 15-30% of >5000 kWh/year. That's roughly half the consumption of half an average UK household in an entire year!
But there's a lot more cooking! With the full support of the @MRC_MBU, we are trying to reduce plastic production and energy consumption on a systemic basis by leaning on the care and expertise of the lab managers of each lab group. Watch this space!!
For #EarthDay, we want to share some of the things we have done this year:
-we have expanded our pipette box and wafer recycling to Sarsted. With this and the Starlabs scheme, we are sending back ~500 kg of plastic to recyling a year
We have continued our efforts into reducing our energy consumption from futile laboratory practices. While we had already switched our -80 C freezers to -70 C, this year we approached more common protocols, like changing the PCR programmes to end in 10 C instead of 4.
