Two flags. Two very different messages to America.
In one video, Somaliland soldiers embrace the American flag following President Trump’s remarks about Somaliland. In the other, men identified as Somalian soldiers trample that same flag.
The United States has provided billions in humanitarian assistance to Somalia and helped bolster the international legitimacy of its federal government. American service members lost their lives serving in Somalia, including 18 killed in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.
To see the American flag treated with such contempt is an insult to those sacrifices.
Meanwhile, Somaliland soldiers embrace it as a symbol of friendship and the partnership they hope to build.
These scenes should prompt a serious question in Washington: does American foreign policy give enough weight to those who openly value its friendship?

Today, at the Presidential Palace, I received
@gidonsaar H.E. Mr. Gideon Sa’ar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, and a high-level delegation on an official visit to the Republic of Somaliland, the first such visit by a foreign minister in 34 years after recognition. I conveyed my deep appreciation to the Government of Israel for its historic and courageous decision of 26 December 2025 to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland. This milestone reflects a relationship founded on mutual respect and shared interests, aimed at cooperation and stability without prejudice to any party.
I emphasized that this recognition opens a new chapter of formal diplomatic relations, security, economic, and development cooperation, serving the mutual interests of both nations and contributing positively to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
I also reaffirmed that Somaliland is a reliable and responsible partner, strategically positioned and committed to advancing regional and international peace, security, and constructive engagement.
It's a great privilege to conduct the first official diplomatic visit to Somaliland, at the invitation of President @Abdirahmanirro.
The visit is also a message: We are determined to vigorously advance relations between Israel and Somaliland.
Today, we held substantive discussions with the President and senior members of his government on the full range of our relations.
The mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries are not directed against anyone. Our shared objective is to promote the mutual benefit of both nations and countries.
In Hargeisa, I made it clear:
Only Israel will decide whom it recognizes and with whom it maintains diplomatic relations.
The President of Somaliland informed me that he has accepted @IsraeliPM Netanyahu’s invitation and will pay an official visit to Israel.
When Mogadishu elites talk about “tools” to block Somaliland’s recognition, they ignore how Somaliland reached this point—and how many lives were sacrificed. Our journey cannot be reversed by travel restrictions. Somaliland has endured, and we now have options, including in aviation.#SomalilandRecognition
Ignored by global leaders, Somalia’s president launches a last-ditch effort to stop Somaliland’s recognition yet the Somaliland recognition push is gaining momentum, with more countries expected to join. #US#UAE#Israel#Hargeisa#Qatar#UN#News#UK#Turkey#Ethiopia#Africa
Somaliland is recognized and moving forward. It’s time for more countries to expand their diplomatic presence in Hargeisa and pursue strategic economic and political partnerships. Somaliland is here to stay and it has immense opportunities to offer the world.#Somaliland#Africa
The Somaliland Mission to the United States sincerely thanks the State of Israel for recognizing the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign and independent state. This recognition reflects not only shared democratic values, but a clear understanding of Somaliland’s strategic importance and shared interests in the Horn of Africa.
For more than three decades, Somaliland has functioned as a democratic, self-governing state and a beacon of stability in the region. Through peaceful transfers of power, one-person one-vote elections, and a strong commitment to free enterprise, Somaliland has defied regional instability and democratic backsliding.
We look forward to joining the Abraham Accords and building a partnership with Israel focused on security cooperation, trade, and economic development.
Salam, Shalom.
سلام ,שלום
@MofaQatar_EN For over three decades, Somaliland has maintained stability, democracy, and self-rule with minimal external support. As a country that existed before its union with Somalia, Somaliland continues to assert its legitimate democratic right to sovereignty.
When one foreign state controls a country’s ports, airspace, resources, and trains its institutions in its own language, that’s not partnership. It’s influence. Turkey’s opposition to Somaliland recognition is about preserving that influence. That's not standing with somalis.
Somaliland should now engage Caribbean and Latin American nations regions with strong traditions of diplomatic independence. Early recognition there could build critical momentum toward broader international acceptance. #RecognizeSomaliland#Independence#Diplomacy
Israel has become the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state. Hear what this means for the Abraham Accords on the daily Reuters World News podcast https://t.co/yv1q6co9oD
For those unfamiliar with Somaliland’s history: Somaliland was legally recognized as an independent state on 26 June 1960. At that time, it was acknowledged by several countries and entered the international community as a sovereign entity. Only days later, Somaliland voluntarily united with Somalia, a union that was never properly ratified and ultimately collapsed.
Following years of conflict and injustice, Somaliland reasserted its sovereignty in 1991, restoring the independence it had previously held. Since then, Somaliland has built its own government, maintained peace and security, and functioned as a stable, self-governing state for over three decades. This historical and legal record forms the foundation of Somaliland’s rightful claim to recognition today. #Somaliland
