Comparative clinical and genomic study of invasive SDSE v invasive S. pyogenes in Australia (and beyond). Rise of the clone..... SDSE stg62647! Beautiful work @ouli_xie (remember to read the supplementary material for more details). Powerful collaboration across borders. 🧵👇
Excited to share our latest paper on invasive Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (iSDSE) disease in Australia and in a global context. @syctong @MDaviesLab https://t.co/YD4RR9hmoC
Heard of SDSE? This under-recognised strep bacterium is causing a growing number of serious infections in Australia, with First Nations Australians disproportionately affected.

This study highlights the value of systematic investigations of publicly available (and high quality) bacterial genome sequences. The ability to direct future phenotypic investigations lies on developing tools and approaches to identify evolutionary cues hiding within genomes.
Excited to share our new lab work - driven by our fantastic PhD student (now Dr) @magnus_gj with @HayesScience @syctong: Cataloging of chromosomal inversions in #StrepA reference genomes. Sets an analytical framework for investigations in other pathogens. https://t.co/i5Jd55i5E2
Pleased to share our latest collaborative research on the genomic epi of typhoid fever in Fiji published in @MicrobioSoc. Wonderful collaboration with public heath parters in Fiji/Aus. Evidence of 'selection' in the S. Typhi Vi capsule locus. https://t.co/qYknuplntX.
Honoured to be a member of the StrepA Outbreak Prevention Team @eurekaprizes 2024. Huge thanks to the many students and staff that facilitate the magic of team work and collaboration. Congrats to all #EurekaPrizes finalists!
🏆 Huge congrats to @MDaviesLab from @TheDohertyInst who, together w/ collaborators at @IMBatUQ, won the prestigious #EurekaPrize for their crucial work on tracking Strep A spread and advancing vaccine development. [Watch https://t.co/6DLFvFHrn6]

Out now: @magnus_gj latest PhD work: https://t.co/yLxZdHTouH Systematic evaluation of existing #StrepA transposon mutagenesis work using a pan-genome framework. Interactive html is included for searching of your favour strepA gene: https://t.co/IZuun1DolU @HayesScience @syctong
With an ageing population, we should be wary of the clinical burden of pathogens such as SDSE. Timely review led by the talented @ouli_xie. More clinical information on SDSE disease is needed (watch this space....)
Is Streptococcus dysgalactiae subp. equisimilis (SDSE) just the poor cousin of S. pyogenes? Although it mostly causes disease in adults, there's actually much clinical and genomic overlap! See our review just out in CMR @syctong @MDaviesLab@TheDohertyInst https://t.co/7rdAfgp8pW
We have a research position in 'Microbial Bioinformatics' available in our laboratory. Masters/PhD level applicants with bacterial genomics experience are encouraged to apply. Come and join us @TheDohertyInst @UniMelbMDHS! Applications close 17 June 2024 https://t.co/gnpMy96zpt
Excited to see our latest collaboration in print. Fantastic analysis driven by the talented @ouli_xie . Much still to learn about #strepA and #SDSE transmission and associated clinical genomic epidemiology. @TheDohertyInst @UniMelbMDHS https://t.co/Uh0c8VsCqp
Great to share our latest paper in @NatureComms examining real-world transmission interactions between S. pyogenes and the emerging pathogen S. dysgalactiae subp. equisimilis (SDSE) https://t.co/2QtnQsXarj
@syctong @MDaviesLab@TheDohertyInst + many collaborators!

New global genomic framework for SDSE from our team at the @TheDohertyInst@UniMelb and @DrDaveMacca@usceduau with many international partners. Big shout out analytical skills of @ouli_xie. Refer to thread 👇for key messages. https://t.co/kPsoXigOG4 More SDSE news coming soon!
Excited to share our Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (group C/G strep, SDSE) population genomics study highlighting its overlap with S. pyogenes (group A strep). Made possible by many partners @MDaviesLab @syctong @DrDaveMacca@TheDohertyInst https://t.co/X4X5y54tcu
A great and inspiring 1.5 day visit to Doherty Institute and MCRI in Melbourne kindly hosted by Mark Davies and @JoshOsowicki Apparently just missed out on @Pink singing for the kids at the hospital yesterday. You rock 🤙!

@ElvyJuliet@NatureComms@TheDohertyInst@UQ_News @UniMelbMDHS sorry missed your question @ElvyJuliet Yes, multiple StrepA clones will be associated with changes in iGAS epidemiology. Our study targeted M1 StrepA, of which there are multiple sub-clones, including one clone with 3 extra virulence genes. Coordinated surveillance is key.
Excited to share our latest research which identifies the presence of the 'new' pandemic S. pyogenes clone 'M1uk' in Australian invasive #StrepA cases.
