You’d be surprised at how much this happens across the whole civil service. This is all the ‘levelling up’ idea ever became - London based staff, moving up north, declared for the numbers up north, whilst still clinging onto their London weighting. Nothing to do with helping the north

Last year I visited the site of the 1945 Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb that ended the Second World War.

Easily the most harrowing thing I’ve witnessed in the flesh. It’s not every day you get to see with your own eyes the absolute epitome of brutality that humanity has created up until this point.

In stark contrast, was seeing and sitting at the desk used for the G7 Summit in 2023, that poignantly took place at Hiroshima.

A city that was the closest thing to a living hell becoming an arena for peace and diplomacy not even 80 years later. That hell is best evidenced by photo 3 - the silhouette of a civilian, permanently burned into concrete by the flash of the nuke.

Amazing to also think how the two then-present leaders, one of the only nation in history to bare the effects of a nuclear weapon, and one of the nation who dealt that blow, were both sat there together.

Moments like this that remind you why you got into foreign affairs and history to begin with. Indescribable.

Stagnation in productivity since 2008 would be the biggest driver I’d argue. It’s just genuinely sad to see. In a little over 100 years, we’ve gone from being the pre-eminent superpower to actual mediocrity. Maybe even irrelevance globally.
