ON THIS DAY
26 years ago today, Yugoslavian dictator Slobodan Milosevic’s regime is on the cusp of falling.
Opposition candidate Vojislav Koštunica is victorious in the election, but Milosevic refuses to accept the outcome and pushes for a 2nd round of voting.
Opposition groups call for a general strike and mass mobilisation. On 5th October, hundreds of thousands march on Belgrade from all across Serbia.
The Federal Parliament was occupied. State TV and radio was seized. Police resistance collapsed as a bulldozer pulled up to ram through the front of the RTS building.
2 days later, Milosevic stepped down. His reign of terror was finally over.
His legacy?
⚪️ 104,732 killed in the Bosnian War.
⚪️ > 8000 Bosniaks murdered systematically in a legally recognised genocide.
⚪️800,000 Kosovan Albanians expelled in 1999.
⚪️ 10,000 killed in the Kosovo War.
⚪️ 14,000 killed in the Sarajevo War.
⚪️ 2.2 million displaced from Bosnia.
One of history’s most evil dictators. In Europe. In the 1990s.
His story is shocking from start to finish.
On the first day of the Conservative Conference, Kemi Badenoch released her plan for Britain, entitled the Right Way. This outlined six ways she’d change Britain, including on the economy, defense, immigration and more.
The Crossbench’s @isabellaslink takes a look at the important takeaways from this document from Birmingham!
