“One of the worst things that slows down progress is the concept of 'emergence.'”
This week on 632nm, @drmichaellevin (@TuftsUniversity) argues that the concept of emergence can hold science back by treating unexpected biological behavior as an explanation rather than something to investigate.
“Emergence just means surprise... You didn’t see it coming.”
If we call something “emergent,” we still need to explain why this behavior emerged instead of another. The goal should be to understand the underlying patterns well enough to predict and control them.
We discuss how this perspective could reshape biology, our understanding of intelligence, and AI.

Just realized George Church, who I know well and is the Harvard/MIT genetics legend, CRISPR pioneer, and one of the most important scientists alive, is raising for his gene therapy company Rejuvenate Bio on Wefunder.
This is equity crowdfunding under Regulation CF. Everyday people (not just VCs or the ultra-rich) can invest as little as a few hundred dollars and own actual equity in a company spun out of his lab. One-shot AAV therapies that have already shown heart disease reversal in dogs, with years of safety data, and a path toward humans.
For most of history, this kind of science was locked behind elite institutions and big checks. Now a founder of Church’s stature and his partners are deliberately opening the round to the broader community, and it’s working (oversubscribed, ranked #1 by Kingscrowd).
Rejuvenate Bio spun out of my lab at Harvard, and I co-founded it. One injection reverses cardiac disease in dogs, with three years of safety data and zero safety issues. They’ve raised $3.2M+ and 1,250+ investors are in, and Kingscrowd ranks the round #1 in the country. It closes soon: https://t.co/EDUdl3xq7a
What is a major trigger of chronic inflammation?
Dr. John Sedivy reveals how ancient “jumping genes” awaken as our epigenome decays, mimicking a viral infection that fuels inflammaging. Huge thanks to Dr. Sedivy for joining us on Modern Healthspan! https://t.co/e4by65vHtf
Here at Harvard Medical School with @davidSinclair celebrating the 25th anniversary of his lab! thank you, david for your brilliant work on age rehearsal!
Interesting. The previous cocktail used in the @davidasinclair lab in vitro was similar to that of the Gladyshev study but SL-100 ingredients are not public yet. Did they change the cocktail?
In vivo partial reprogramming using small molecules proved ineffective at low doses, while high doses actually accelerated aging. Key manifestations included significant weight loss and toxic effects such as severe lipid droplet accumulation and mitochondrial stress [Mitchell W, de Magalhães CG, Tyshkovskiy A, et al. In Vivo Chemical Reprogramming Is Associated With a Toxic Accumulation of Lipid Droplets Hindering Rejuvenation. Aging Cell. 2026 Feb;25(2):e70390. doi: 10.1111/acel.70390.].
A BIG Thank You. to @PeterDiamandis who has supported so much of the movement in longevity. Without his initiatives we would still be a little known tribe of makers.
Our lab’s v2 in vivo age-restoration technology is fundamentally different from the v1 technology now in human trials. We’ll reveal it publicly at @ARDD_Meeting: Chris Petty, Thurs 1:30 p.m. ET, and me, Sat 6 p.m. ET
Big thanks to Dr. Noah Davidsohn for joining us!
Key takeaways:
• Partial cellular reprogramming (OSK) doubled remaining lifespan in elderly mice
• A 10-minute gene therapy infusion can turn liver cells into a decade-long biofactory

Thanks to @DavidPerlmutter for joining us to discuss Brain Defenders!
Key insights:
• Alzheimer’s pivots when microglia shift from protector to destroyer
• "Normal" blood sugar (>90 mg/dL) can trigger brain inflammation decades before symptoms appear

If you don’t know Michael Levin’s work, you should. One of the greatest thinkers of our time
He studies bioinformation & makes new living things such as Xenobots to understand how cells know what organ to make and when to stop growing 🫀🧠
There is a fake longevity news site full of made-up stories designed to look like it's an academic journal. At least some people in the field are falling for it. A medical doctor posted on LinkedIn that @NirBarzilaiMD had written an article about the positive interim analysis of TAME, which sounded wrong to me since AFAIK TAME isn't funded yet. So I explored the site. There's a bunch of fabricated stores including one on the @DogAgingProject TRIAD clinical trial. Many of the biggest names in the field are listed as co-authors on fabricated "articles". Be careful who you trust. The signal-to-noise problem in longevity is only getting worse.

We need to stop treating aging and decline as a sacred law of nature and instead see them as an engineering problem. Believe me when I say there are MANY people working on it for everyone's benefit.
Love seeing more longevity platforms dedicated to rigorous, evidence-based aging science. Congrats to @davidasinclair on the launch of https://t.co/KyxiXNoiCN. Looking forward to diving into the articles and research updates.
I’m incredibly proud & excited to finally share what we’ve been building for the past 3 years…

In a world of conflicting health advice, how can anyone distinguish between what’s supported by science and what’s just opinion?
I wanted to build something new. A place where scientists, engineers, industry leaders, and the public come together, where people can understand what the science actually says, and where we move healthcare beyond treating sickness toward extending healthy lifespan well beyond what’s currently possible.
Explore the new Lifespan Magazine. Watch the Lifespan show. Ask scientists questions. Join a global community. And help support research and the next generation of scientists working to extend healthy human lifespan.
I believe we’re at the beginning of a revolution in our understanding of human aging, and perhaps one day, our ability to change it. I want everyone to be part of it.
Built by scientists. Built for you. https://t.co/rwNzbHYUiy
Life’s too short. Let’s change that, together! 👊

The median age of an NIH scientist is 71. Nobel-winning work happens in your 20s. 45% of a researcher's time goes to paperwork... While the NIH budget just hit $45 billion with nothing to show for it. I sat down with @mkratsios47 to talk about the White House plan to blow this up: autonomous labs running science 24/7 with no humans, 70 years of federal data being uploaded to AI, and a target that just moved from 2x to 10x scientific productivity.
-- The US banned all non-American humanoid robot imports to force a domestic supply chain.
-- Supersonic flight: speed limit replaced with noise limit. Decades-old ban lifted.
-- American AI Exports Program launched: turnkey US-made AI stacks for the world, government-financed. The counter to China's Belt and Road for intelligence.
-- Kratsios on the 10x target: "Even six months ago, Opus wasn't out yet. Anthropic's revenue was sub-$10 billion. The pace of AI innovation is just insane. We've got to aim big."
