Delayed payments have turned genuine, honest, & hardworking SME owners into specialized liars. A client tells you they will pay you on Friday. Friday comes, they tell you payment was processed, please check on Saturday or Monday.

We all know nothing happens on Saturdays. Come Monday, you ask the client for the POP [ Proof of Payment ], they tell you, ohh yeah, the payment was processed but waiting for one signatory.

In short, the payment was not processed; they had just managed you & they tell you that by this coming Friday you will be sorted, as the signatory is in Budapest watching the World Cup.

On your end, you had promised your employees to sort out their salaries on Monday, you had promised your landlord to pay rent by that Saturday, you hard promised your suppliers that they should deliver, you will pay them that Friday evening, you had told your mother that you will send her money for her cancer meds that Friday evening, you had promised your siblings to send them money for food by that Friday evening, you had promised your girlfriend that you will refund her the cash she took illegaly from her chama by that Friday 6 PM.

It is Monday at 1600 Hours & all your two phones are ringing on repeat from people you promised & the chats & texts are coming in faster and furious than you can breathe & each one is calling you liar & telling you unprintable words.

No one can see the tears you trying to balance as you download 20 digital lending apps to brow as much as you can to try seal the leakages before you get a heart attack.

Delayed payments are the single most dangerous factor to the lifeline of any business. It is a national emergency matter that must be addressed. Once i get to Parliament, it will be a priority for me to create an ecosystem that will give SMES the right support.
