@TONYTRAN1201@MITPATE28348824 Hi Tony
I say all the time how lucky I feel to have not been exposed to social media until I was older. The access children have to these apps is so concerning because of the harm we know they can cause. Social media can effect adults negatively, imagine what it can do to kids.
I choose #ToxicSocialMedia. As The Social Dilemma documentary discussed, there is a toxicity and danger in the power our social media platforms hold in many of our lives. #Virtual90#RutgersDCIM
So much of what we are exposed to on social media is manipulative and influential. and many of us don't even realize it. Seymour suggests that it is not just the social media platforms to blame for the toxic climate online, but society as whole needs to be responsible as well.
@Ayesha4657 This a great example to go along with this week's readings. It is so disappointing to see how dismissive people can be to others who are simply just trying to have fun or pursue their passion for gaming.
@mpd_156 This is a really great example of a hashtag relating to the #GamerGate article we read this week in class. I especially like this hashtag become it shows a single platform trying to be more inclusive.
One reading this week discussed #Gamergate and how typically being seen as a gamer is contingent on gender. In an attempt to get rid this misconception, I found #gamergirls which supports female gamers. #Virtual90#RutgersDCIM
Braithwaite (2016) discussed how #gamergate was characterized by "sexual and sexist attacks on women in and around gaming communities". #Gamergirls is a counteractive movement to give girls and women a place in the gaming world.
Jackson and Welles explain that the "technological architecture" of platforms like Twitter allow members counter publics more power to rewrite dominant narratives. This community is different from a community that is not "counter" because their views are different from majority
#bluelivesmatter represents a counter public network formed during the BLM movement. While mass media was focusing on protecting the lives of African Americans in this country, this hashtag took to defend law enforcement in attempt to shift the focus. #Virtual90#RutgersDCIM
@Joselfandsoc Hi Joanne-
This is a great example. When I think of hashtags that enable a community, #MeToo is one of the biggest. This hashtag transformed the way we talk about sexual assault and created a safe place for survivors to share their stories and gain support.
@brym24 Hi!
This is a great example. This hashtag is going to bring all different kinds of people together! As you discussed, using this hashtag can have effects on the global scale and has such an ability to bring awareness and support.
@Ahmad89653 Hi Ahmad-
I choose a similar hashtag as it pertains to mental health. Mine is specific to men's mental health but it is interesting to see how communities can grow within niche groups and more open groups.
encouraged men to speak about their mental health, something that society has told them was wrong. Celebrities and regular people can join together to create action which is the best part about networked communities, we can all come together from all parts of the world.
I picked #ItsOkaytoTalk . This hashtag started back in 2016 in order to encourage men to talk about their mental health. This created a global community where men felt comfortable talking about mental health.

The biggest take away I had from this week's reading by Parks is the importance of collective action and how virtual communities can promote it. When we work together and all share our stories, change can be made. This hashtag brought a change just by existing because it…
"Tinder is allowing people with busy lives to pursue partners without having to devote much extra time or energy" (Hobbs, Owen, and Gerber). This ability to pursue partners and meet new people with little effort, allows us to also move on with little effort at times.
I choose #thankyounext. One of the key concepts from the reading is the efficiency of online dating. This hashtag relates to the ability to quickly move on from one person to another when Tinder fails. #Virtual90#RutgersDCIM
