Problems like speeding can be influenced by regulation, but aren't caused by regulation.
Problems like poor urban planning/poor safety standards are rooted entirely in regulation; individuals have little influence there.

A better point; the rates (that I was able to find, which were mostly self reported) of people speeding in EU vs US are roughly the same, and by roughly the same amounts relative to the existing speed limits.

@jesus__kristo @Steve206966 @jake_gotta Just yesterday my GPS thought I was on a residential road that ran parallel to the highway I was actually on. If a geofenced speed limit had been enforced, my car would have slowed down to 25 on the freeway and I'd probably have been rear ended.

Smaller cars designed for pedestrian safety, instead of exclusively rider safety
Investment in public transit where possible
Urban planning that reduces thoroughfares and makes walking areas safer

(These also benefit carbon emissions, as a bonus)

1, there's no good way to prevent all speeding in all cases.
2, there are much better, more efficient, and more effective ways to reduce vehicle deaths that don't involve blaming consumers for regulatory problems.

@jesus__kristo @Steve206966 @jake_gotta I genuinely have no idea how you think we could stop people from driving over the speed limit with currently available technology, without either extremely judicious punitive enforcement or very cost prohibitive technology. Geofencing isn't accurate enough to do that.

@jesus__kristo @Steve206966 @jake_gotta And to be clear: I'm not defending car culture. I'm arguing that aggressive enforcement of laws and being cruel and punitive towards individuals is a bad solution to the wrong problem.

Even with fines scaled to income, fine based systems still disproportionately punish the poor.

@jesus__kristo @Steve206966 @jake_gotta ...your own source. Many of the countries who your source cites as having much better road safety than the US also have higher speed limits than most of the US. Heck, Germany has *no* speed limits.

If the issue were speeding, or even speed, *in isolation*, how is that the case?

Imagine a geofence forcing your car to brake from 70 to 35 on the highway.

@DrunkScribe To each their own, but "They can say, they can say that it sounds crazy, they can say they can say I've lost my mind, I don't care I don't care so call me crazy" is just such a bad line. (*in my opinion.)
From what I've heard, the rest of the soundtrack is fine enough.
