Zimbabwe Tobacco Output Surges as Industry Eyes Vision 2030 and Sustainability. On the sidelines of the International Tobacco Growers Association Africa Regional Meeting in Harare, Hon. Minister Dr. A.J. Masuka said tobacco production has grown by about 90% to a record 355 million kg in 2025. Projections for this year are 380–400 million kg, moving toward the Vision 2030 target of 500 million kg under the leadership of His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa. He described tobacco as a key rural transformation crop, with over 135,000 farmers, 85% of them smallholders , earning an average of about US$10,000 annually. This reinforces Zimbabwe’s position as Africa’s leading producer, while the country is placing growing emphasis on value addition by learning from models like India’s. ITGA CEO Ms. Mercedes Vasquez praised Zimbabwean tobacco as among the world’s highest quality, citing experienced growers and strong production systems. She added that future competitiveness will depend on sustainability, traceability, environmental protection, and compliance with tightening global market regulations.@HeraldZimbabwe@obertjiri@ZCFU_official@zfu_official@timb_zw@ZimTobaccoExpo@ZBCNewsonline@ZTNPrime@RadioZim263@ZiFMStereoNews

Inspect your tobacco seedbeds regularly to detect and control aphids early. These sap-sucking pests weaken young seedlings and are major carriers of Bushy Top Virus (TBTV) and Potato Virus Y (PVY). Once infected, seedlings become stunted and unhealthy, robbing your crop of its full potential.
Protect your seedlings by maintaining strict field hygiene and biosecurity practices. Early detection and timely intervention are the best defence against aphids and the diseases they transmit.
The response to the predicted Super El Nino in 2026/27 prioritizes Pfumvudza/Intwasa & agro‑ecological tailoring. These climate‑smart approaches boost yields & align crops to local conditions. This is a national policy direction for resilience.

Today the Permanent Secretary Professor O. Jiri toured the Glen Somerset Irrigation Scheme which was financed by Government through the Agricultural Marketing Fund under SI 87 of 2025.
He underscored the critical role of irrigation development in achieving food security.
Today Hon. Minister Dr. A.J. Masuka commissioned the Wanezi Dam, Irrigation Scheme and Piped Water System in Insiza District, a major milestone in building climate resilience and transforming rural livelihoods.
Implemented in partnership with UNDP and supported by the UK's FCDO, the project provides a 1.7 million m³ water reservoir, a 30-hectare irrigation scheme, fisheries and clean, solar-powered water supply for over 700 households.
He stated that the project advances President Mnangagwa's vision of turning every dam into an economic hub, with the irrigation scheme expected to generate more than US$200,000 annually while contributing to Zimbabwe's target of 496,000 hectares under irrigation by 2030.

“Let’s Save Our livestock ” — Farmers Urged to Act Now .
The ADAS Chief Director Mrs Magwenzi highlighted that winter grazing is now limited and of poor quality, so farmers must start supplementary feeding immediately using silage, baled hay, and urea-treated stover preserved from summer. She also urged farmers to secure clean water near feeding points to avoid weight loss, maintain dipping and vaccinations, and breed according to climate through agro-ecological tailoring. With Drought Mitigation Centres and Farmer Field Schools in every ward teaching these methods, Mrs. Magwenzi warned that past droughts cost Zimbabwe many cattle and stressed, “Let’s plan based on probability” to grow herd numbers and keep food secure.@HeraldZimbabwe@obertjiri@AgritexS@zfu_official@zcfu_matnorth@ZCFU_official@ZBCNewsonline@RadioZim263@ZTNPrime

Zimbabwe’s Emergency Food Production Project has closed, with Permanent Secretary Professor Dr Obert Jiri celebrating its impact: 188,000 farmers supported across 153,000 hectares, record wheat yields of 5 tonnes per hectare, and a 90% repayment rate through the Seed Revolving Fund managed by AFC Bank and Land Bank. He praised partnerships with FAO and the African Development Bank for building resilience through COVID-19, the Ukraine conflict, and back-to-back El Niño droughts, while warning that rising fertilizer prices and a forecasted “super” El Niño mean it is “the wrong time to pull out”. The Ministry now shifts to scaling irrigation to 496,000 ha, expanding mechanisation, driving value addition, and climate-proofing agriculture to meet Vision 2030’s US$15.8 billion target, urging the AfDB, FAO, and financiers to remain engaged beyond 30 June 2026.

Govt Urges Knowledge Transfer as Quton Cotton Trials Hit 5 Tonnes/Ha. ADAS Chief Director Mrs. Magwenzi, speaking on behalf of Prof. dr. O. Jiri at Quton Kadoma Research Centre’s Cotton Field Day, praised the centre’s research showing varieties with 34-74 bolls per plant and yields of 4-5 tonnes/ha compared to farmers’ 0.2-0.5 tonnes/ha. She said the decline from 300,000 to 50,000 metric tonnes in national output is due to poor execution, not genetics, and called for extension officers to learn at the research centre then replicate the agronomic practices, inputs, and management on farms. She highlighted both cheaper improved OPVs and higher-yielding hybrids as options, and urged more on-farm trials so farmers can see viable cotton production in their own areas.

Permanent Secretary Prof. dr. O. Jiri has called for urgent retooling of Zimbabwe’s 14,000 agriculture ministry staff to adopt data-driven, AI-led farming amid shrinking drought cycles of 3–4 years. During a courtesy call by ESAMI Director General Prof. P. Kiuluku, he said new satellite and digital tools have exposed data gaps that hinder climate response. Jiri urged tailor-made training for Agricultural Business Advisory Officers and senior managers to supervise modern tech, handle global shocks, and meet youth food preferences.
Prof. Kiuluku reaffirmed ESAMI’s commitment to its member states and proposed strategic collaboration with the Ministry to strengthen institutional capacity, improve agribusiness management, and roll out targeted training for food security and rural modernization.@obertjiri@HeraldZimbabwe@ZBCNewsonline@ZTNPrime@3KtvZim@RadioZim263@AgritexS@ESAMI_INSTITUTE
