Renewed fighting puts pressure on the health system and increases people's humanitarian needs

The recent escalation of fighting in #Yemen has led to growing numbers of wounded people, adding pressure to a health system already stretched thin, and forcing thousands of families to flee their homes.

Since 10 September, over 60 injured patients from the west coast have been admitted to Al-Gamhouria hospital in #Aden. Many of them require urgent operations, blood transfusions, close monitoring, and long periods of care. This has put significant pressure on the hospital’s emergency room, operating theatres, wards, blood bank, medical stock, and staff.

Médecins Sans Frontières (.@MSF) has expanded our support to the emergency room in response. Our team is helping hospital staff assess the condition of incoming patients quickly, so the most critical are treated first. They are also supplying the emergency room, operating theatres, and wards with emergency medicines and materials. In coordination with health authorities, MSF has also supported hospitals in Hodeidah with medicines and materials to treat people wounded in the fighting. We have also provided trauma kits to Taiz, Al-Bayda and Al-Jawf hospitals.

أدى التصعيد الأخير للقتال في اليمن إلى تزايد أعداد الجرحى، مما زاد الضغط على نظام صحي منهك في الأساس، وأجبر آلاف الأسر على ترك منازلها.

ومنذ 10 سبتمبر/أيلول، استقبل مستشفى الجمهورية في عدن أكثر من 60 مصابًا من الساحل الغربي . ويحتاج العديد منهم إلى عمليات جراحية عاجلة، ونقل دم، ومراقبة دقيقة، وفترات طويلة من الرعاية. وقد فرض ذلك ضغطًا كبيرًا على قسم الطوارئ وغرف العمليات وأجنحة الاستشفاء وبنك الدم والمخزون الطبي والكوادر العاملة في المستشفى.

استجابة لذلك، وسَّعت أطباء بلا حدود دعمها لغرفة الطوارئ، حيث يساعد فريقنا طاقم المستشفى على تقييم حالة المرضى الوافدين بسرعة، ليتم علاج الحالات الأكثر خطورة أولًا. كما توفر فرق أطباء بلا حدود الأدوية والمستلزمات الطبية الطارئة إلى قسم الطوارئ وغرف العمليات والأجنحة. وبالتنسيق مع السلطات الصحية، دعمت أطباء بلا حدود أيضًا مستشفيات في الحديدة بالأدوية والمواد اللازمة لعلاج المصابين جراء القتال، كما زودنا مستشفيات في تعز والبيضاء والجوف بمستلزمات علاج الإصابات البليغة.

A maternity upgrade is changing lives in Haydan

In April 2026, the maternity department at #Haydan Hospital 🏥doubled in size and gained specialist staff for the first time. Monthly obstetric admissions have since tripled.

With support from .@MSF, the maternity department was expanded from nine to 18 beds, separating maternity patients from the general non-obstetric medico-surgical ward. Nine beds are now available for women with complicated pregnancies and postpartum, those recovering from surgery and other patients requiring closer care, while another nine are dedicated to normal pre- and post-partum cases.

The upgrade has strengthened access to maternal healthcare for more than 293,000 people living in the hospital's catchment area. Most importantly, the hospital recruited four obstetrician-gynaecologists, four additional midwives and four nurse assistants, giving the team, for the first time, both the expertise and capacity to provide critical care within the hospital itself.
