@SophiaGermond thank you so much, Sophia!! our intervention was really inspired by our experiences trying to access research online this year and feeling frustrated by some of the obstacles we were encountering

One thing today's GLAM conference made me think about is accessibility issues and how inextricable they are even from our own conference tweets (e.g. adding ALT text to photos on Twitter) #DEI4GLAM

@katelynprocopio@costisd I think one big thing about TikTok, too, is how short and punchy the videos are - you get to be exposed to substantial and engaging content without having to invest in a super long video!
- Fatma
I love how many groups from today's conference have honed in on how much TikTok can build communities and spread awareness around many important issues (heritage in the case of @stitchyourstory, or food insecurity in the case of @foodinterventi1) #DEI4GLAM
Since Tiktok enables users to stitch previously stitched videos, we would hope to create a collage of languages with the following question: โHow do you say HOME in your heritage language?โ #dei4glam 9/12
@stitchyourstory It was a major and personal issue to our undergrad careers, so hopefully this shines light and brings changes to future undergrad students (or anyone needing access to digital information) ๐

Here's the thing: in the #socialdigitalmemory course we had access to dozens of important works by scholars, also access to relatively high speed Internet... what of students in Africa, many parts of Asia, even excluded areas in so called developed countries? #dei4glam
I wonder how these ideas would lend themselves to limited access to heritage collections and materials... much of that still behind paywalls too #dei4glam
@SkyeEva From working in libraries, I definitely see the discussion of open access being a major concern and new researchers getting the information they need + getting their own works out there. The 'elitism' that plays into these big journals can really interrupt (1/2)
@SkyeEva It feels like the logic is so circular, too?? like you need to publish to these journals to get a reputation, but you also need a reputation to publish to the journals?? how is anyone supposed to get a foothold into the system?
- Fatma
Your responses are not surprising; even though COVID has led to greater online access, it has also meant less access to libraries' physical resources.
These results raise questions about online access, esp. for those who may not have libraries to fall back on. #DEI4GLAM 2/12
@zxu_msl Free access to research would be so nice, though I can see the implications w/ copyright and financial situations, but just seeing how difficult it is to access information as it is, we can only hope that our works/frustrations bring change! :(

Good morning everyone! Itโs ๐๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฎ, ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ, and weโre excited to talk to you about our GLAM intervention today! ๐ #DEI4GLAM
@foodinterventi1 Yes! and to add on to what Jacqueline said, research shouldn't be restricted to post secondary institutions because for many people, those institutions arent an option (due to various kinds of barriers - accessibility, financial, etc.)
- Fatma
@zxu_msl Yeah it's not surprising that big journal publishers have been opposing websites advocating for more open digital access to research - I think more and more we're seeing how commercially-oriented these journals area, and how it's not really about the research itself...

@click_wonder A big issue with closed captioning for videos is how its not easy to automatically generate it b/c people speak differently, w/ different accents, etc. (e.g. w/ Youtube's glitchy automatic closed captioning system) - would this be something the plug-in would account for?
- Fatma
@click_wonder This a great idea, esp b/c a lot of the times issue of accessibility can be easily overlooked, slip under people's radars (e.g. I know that recently there's been a meme going around that people have raised concerns about b/c it cant be read by text to speech programs)
- Fatma
@click_wonder The first time I learned about WCAG was in my 3rd year of undergrad but wished I knew sooner! It's definitely important to introduce to web users/creators to create a web space that is usable for all!!
