Instructure, the parent company of the Canvas Learning Management System, a vendor to Mississippi State University and many other large universities and educational institutions, issued its first public statement regarding the Canvas security incident that has affected over 9,000 schools and 275 million records.
The company has provided an FAQ page that helps explain what happened and how it affects MSU, our individual students, and faculty. To be clear, MSUโs website and data were not hacked or compromised. Instructure (Canvas), as they explain, experienced a security incident that affected MSU, as it has thousands of other users of the third-party vendor's software.
We share Instructureโs information with our students, faculty, and staff through the link provided: https://t.co/Nwn5aNzFGI
Today [May 7, 2026] at approximately 3 p.m., Instructure, the vendor that provides Canvas, was breached. As a result, Mississippi State University is currently experiencing an outage to the Canvas Learning Management System related to an ongoing nationwide security incident. It is important to note that no MSU internal systems have been compromised by this event, and MSU passwords are not involved.
MSU will never direct users to unverified third-party sites for Canvas-related communications or remediation activities. Out of abundance of caution, users should avoid interacting with or clicking on any links, messages, or content that may be posted by threat actors or appear suspicious.
Mississippi State understands the importance of Canvas to teaching and learning activities and recognizes the challenges this outage is causing. We will share updates as additional information becomes available.

Mississippi State University will return to normal operations Tuesday, Jan. 27 and is asking students, faculty and staff to monitor weather conditions and exercise caution and good judgment in making travel and personal safety decisions. MSU Extension and MAFES locations will follow unit leadership.
While much of North Mississippi continues to see major impacts from severe winter weather, students and employees unable to return to campus should communicate with their respective faculty members and supervisors. MSU leaders understand that those without power may have limited ability to communicate and will consider academic accommodation requests as deemed appropriate for individual circumstances.
