Buddhist and Hindu traditions look at our ability to think as a sense. Like seeing, hearing, touch, taste, smell. And thinking.
When we overuse a sense it gets tired, jaded, stops working. As information about the world multiplied, we kept using our minds more and more to a point where we started identifying with them. We forgot the need to shut our minds up once in a while so they can recover.
What happens when we stop using it while fully awake is what a lot of people call meditation.
