@Brad_Plothow @BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter@PaulHawken We need to take action today, absolutely, but we also need to be patient enough for nature to take its course and recover.
@Brad_Plothow @BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter@PaulHawken Actions match the moment is a great saying. I'm not sure what your daily work with natural systems is but a 'moment' is a relative timeframe. For example a Redwood tree doesn't produce fertile cones/seeds until 200 years old.
@Brad_Plothow @BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter@PaulHawken I also think that global markets have enabled farmers to sell anywhere and our water laws have been 'use it or lose it'. So if I was a farmer, had water I needed to use and could fetch the best dollar shipping overseas, then why not grow alfalfa?
@Brad_Plothow @BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter@PaulHawken Good ideas executed too quickly can yield catastrophic outcomes in agriculture or any industry that relies/ partners with natural systems like water or soil. Look no further than Sri Lanka moving too quickly to organic

@Brad_Plothow @BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter@PaulHawken I'm suggesting you properly incentivize farmers to adopt practices that produce more water conscious agriculture and healthier soil, which is a long-term sustainable approach. Let's go from 3/4 to 1/2 of water usage.
@samandersen@BlakeMcClary great question: in 2018 Utah produced 1.85M tons of Hay. Ideal hay has 13-16% moisture content so you are potentially exporting 240k-296k tons (~56M-72M gallons) of water inside the hay. That doesn't represent the water required to grow it.
@BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter @Brad_Plothow This article presents the value of green space and water management. A quote I love from @PaulHawken is, "plants manage water and water manages temperature". With August monsoons, those alfalfa fields can store and manage water better than if it was bare

@BlakeMcClary@MrJoeHunter @Brad_Plothow The concept of non-ag businesses as an alternative is a concern at scale. If a farmer sold out their water rights then they'd likely sell the land to a developer...which only furthers issues of desertification in our state.
@BlakeMcClary Even that comes at short-term losses for Farmers trying to make responsible transitions. The 2023 Farm Bill needs more focus on supporting their transition to long term sustainable practices. Big Ag and Govt got farmers into much of this mess and should also help them out of it.
@BlakeMcClary It can become oversimplified to focus on WHAT farmers are growing. HOW they grow can dramatically change the amount of water required. Using practices like cover crops, no-till and animals grazing/fertilizing in the off season.
@scottcowley@phil_herbert I recently spoke with @rainakumra about Tech Ethics and her tactics I think would also apply to your social media strategy as it relates to the 2nd, 3rd and nth order impacts of a strategy or metric to follow.

@danmccay@UCAIR_UT Once it is red, WFH will only slow down the air getting worse but it won't reverse the AQI. As I understand it, getting out of red requires a change in weather not a change in human behavior. That said, I'm all for reducing pollution even if it is already a red day.
@danmccay Thanks for seeking feedback on this. @UCAIR_UT will help keep you honest on the data. The eye opener for me was that it isn't just about creating a #reddayremoteday, people need to WFH when days are orange and possibly yellow if the forecast shows it is going towards red.
Welp, we raised $5k in 50 hours for United Way and now I have a mullet...win-win. I did my best to cut a mullet at home with katiebdumke saving my hair from a total disaster. This made me wonder if hair stylists… https://t.co/i1K9pFM2rs
Thanks @uwsl Venmo @mitchdumke makes it even faster and I'll add it to the count! Going to a great cause and selfishly by family Easter photo will never look better!
@MTDumke is just $700 away from having to cut his hair like #JoeExotic.
He's raising funds for the United Ways of Utah #COVID19 Community Response Fund. When he gets to $5,000, he'll be rocking a mullet.
