The answer isn’t to boycott these. They provide essential services and cash to many families. What we need is legislation to protect communities and hold these platforms to account.

The tragedy of modern day, tech-accelerated gig economy is the hidden costs of these that neither the platforms that built these services, nor us, the consumers, have to pay. These are financial costs paid by workers, or social ones that burden local communities.

Deliveroo et al made our lives easier, provided a lifeline for restaurants during Covid, but it is undeniable how much strain that put on roads, parking spots and crucially, riders welfare, be it in the Gulf’s sweltering heat or Europe’s freezing winters.
