@lepanto742 I understand this point but history is filled with governments letting violent criminals loose as a political tool. It's happening in Virginia right now.
@bluefirewake74 I think the ancients and medieval period had a vastly more coherent world view in general. Their vices and virtues both burned brighter. We live in a time of mass acedia where we just kind of accept the banality of evil.
@fistofnicaea The arguments may be the same, but it's different thing to hold an opinion before it is settled by an ecumenical council. (I know Luther died just before Trent ended but we all know he would have rejected the ruling)
@SMPT799053 If you stretched this logic to only include the traditional Sadducees canon, the Torah, you would be missing most of the old testament and all of the new testament as sources of divine revelation.
@SMPT799053 I don't think this is the case because one of the explicit references for prayers for the dead comes from Maccabees. This gets rejected by Protestants for not being scripture all the time.
@GrZmNkY09 It is a Bible based practice, you just don't like the interpretation. Do you go to Church on Sunday instead of Saturday? No where in the Bible does it command that worship to God should be moved from Saturday to Sunday. You are following the traditions of men, are you a heathen?
@GrZmNkY09 This is equivalent to saying that since you sing to God in church on Sunday as part of worship that you can't sing happy birthday to your dad. I wouldn't want any to mistake you for engaging in Egyptian paganism and worshipping a god-man like Pharaoh.
@GrZmNkY09 When Jesus healed the lame man at Bethsaida, he could have rebuked him for seeking the healing of the angel in the stirred up waters instead of God, but he must have forgotten.
