A significant milestone achieved in Muga Rearing & Grainage through the joint efforts of DOS West Bengal and MESSO, P-4 Mendipathar under the Cooler Zone Programme.
Basic Muga DFLs supplied to Fulhara, Matigara, Gorubathan, Kurseong, and Kolbong farms have shown highly encouraging results. Successful grainage operations are presently underway at Matigara by following standard SOPs along with low-cost scientific temperature and humidity management practices, achieving around 1.3 g fecundity per DFL. The produced DFLs have been supplied to different DOS units across the North East.
A proud achievement from Fulhara Farm — once affected by anti-social activities, the farm has now been revitalized through Muga culture, producing more than 13,700 cocoons from just 400 g DFLs.
This programme demonstrates how scientific relocation and cooler zone adaptation can contribute significantly towards sustainable Muga development and the conservation of India’s Golden Silk heritage.

Imagine the impact if every consumer knew who grew their food, or who raised silken cocoons that weave comfort and dignity into our lives. Respect for the real grower would no longer be optional.
Stock replenishment and cooler zone grainage was successfully completed by CSB P4 Mendipathar & P3 Rompara respectively, despite prevailing sub-optimal climatic conditions in the Garo Hills region. The area experienced relatively low night temperatures of 12–15°C with <60% relative humidity, which are generally unfavourable for optimum Muga grainage performance.
Through dedicated efforts of the staff and systematic micro-management, the grainage room environment was effectively regulated by increasing the temperature by 5–6°C and maintaining relative humidity upto 70%. These scientific interventions resulted in excellent reproductive performance & improved fecundity.
Regular field monitoring was carried out throughout the rearing period to ensure the collection of superior-quality cocoons.
🔹 Average female cocoon weight: 7.5–8.5 g
🔹 DFLs : cocoon ratio: 2.44 : 1
🔹 2nd generation hatching: ≥90%
The outcome of this initiative demonstrates that scientific interventions, strict hygiene, and precise environmental regulation can significantly enhance Muga seed productivity even under adverse climatic conditions.
The implementation of cooler-zone rearing and timely stock replenishment ensured the achievement of seed production targets by both P4 Mendipathar and P3 Rompara Units.
In addition, the coordinated and proactive support extended by these units played a vital role in enabling P-3 Kobulong to achieve its production targets. This collaborative effort contributes to strengthening the quality Muga seed supply in the region and supports the sustainable development of the muga sector.@csbmot@TexMinIndia
