Here's what the sports team logic does to a person long-term:

It makes them incapable of learning from loss.

A sports fan doesn't analyze why their team lost in order to develop a more accurate picture of the world.

They explain the loss. They find external causes. The referee. The politics. The media.

The team itself, the strategy, the fundamental premises, those are not available for examination because the team is identity, not analysis.

This is why "Vietnam syndrome" was treated as a psychological condition to be overcome rather than a lesson to be absorbed.

The lesson was: you cannot defeat a people fighting for their own home with a military fighting for a think tank's theory.

The lesson that was absorbed was: we need better public relations, faster wars, and fewer cameras.

The team lost.

They didn't ask why.

They asked how to win next time.

Different thing.

Different result.
