@gcolbourn I'm not sure if utilitarianism is just an inherently corrupting ideology or if crazy people adopt it because it lets them justify doing evil things.
Governments and experts are worried that a superintelligent AI could destroy humanity. For some in Silicon Valley, that wouldn’t be a bad thing, writes David A. Price. https://t.co/My2valevzr
This is right, but I also think a lot of EAs' real objection is that on some level they want to be important/liked by their friends at Anthropic more than they actually care about AI safety.
Part of the reason we're in the mess we're in is because EA thought ordinary people wouldn't/couldn't get AI safety, and therefore outside game strategies are not viable.
The polling, and IABIED's public reception, shows that's simply not the case.
@BDSixsmith "Kekius Maximus" - a Rick and Morty style cartoon about an irreverent, "anti-woke" billionaire inventor who roams the galaxy, saving the day with his madcap inventions--and owning the libs in his spare time.
@chf75 @daniel_271828 Some, like Richard Sutton are old enough that it hardly matters. Others (Larry Page) probably think they are special and will be uploaded by the machines and become AI.
Senators Hawley and Blumenthal's new bill seems to be the first piece of legislation introduced in a legislative body ever that explicitly contemplates preventing the development of artificial superintelligence.
A thread on what this groundbreaking bill proposes:

@simonsarris The end of ZIRP should have suppressed the stock market too. Instead we see a white collar bloodbath and markets are up-only and led by the highly AI-invested Mag 7 companies.
@Blogsbloke@simonsarris Yep, the end of ZIRP should have suppressed stock evaluations too. Instead stocks have zoomed, led by the most AI-exposed companies, the Mag7.
@ShameVincent@Blogsbloke@simonsarris Yeah, and the Mag7 are exactly the most AI-exposed companies in the world. So that fits with the "AI-caused this" narrative.
A Vatican roundtable on artificial intelligence concluded that no one should be allowed to develop superintelligent AI until there's a consensus that it will be safe.
@robustus I'm actually an optimistic person in general, but not about AI. And as I said, even the AI CEOs only seem to have depressing ideas about AI (fake AI girlfriends, replacing human workers, endless AI slop machines replacing human art and expression, mass surveillance tech, etc.)
@nic_carter In reality, everyone just hates the bleak, dehumanized AI future the tech companies are creating and it comes out in opposition to data centers.
