@sandyespinozaa@besavageee I agree. Many student-athletes go into college as a way to have a career in professional sports, but when that doesn't work out they are left not knowing what to do because there is little support for academic achievement. #ucr150@besavageee
@nina_kobayashi_ @besavageee I agree, there should be more emphasis on the academics side for these athletes and more support from the athletic department and their coaches #ucr150@besavageee
African Americans have a different experience as student-athletes because they are underestimated in their potential for academic achievement, this ends up perpetuating the student-athlete to college dropout/professional-athlete pipeline #ucr150@besavageee
The NCAA & university coaches target students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and exploit their talent for profit. The promise of a free education sounds nice, but it is not a fair trade-off due to the restrictions and rules that the student undergoes.
@besavageee#ucr150
@TeresaOro007 @besavageee Coaches should never make student-athletes miss class because they should know that academics come first. It really shows you where these coaches' priorities are at. #ucr150@besavageee
@aaren017@besavageee I completely agree that the NCAA acts like a business because their policies are made to maximize their financial gain rather than what's best for the athlete #ucr150@besavageee
@ccass015@besavageee Hi Corrin, I think that's an interesting perspective. I imagine that community college student-athletes have different rules because they are not D1 or D2. I agree that it can be very hard on a student to transfer and shouldn't be taken lightly #ucr150@besavageee
It is unfortunate that the 4-4 transfer rules are not flexible towards student-athletes because these are young 17-18 year old students who are uncertain about their future and what they want to do. #ucr150@besavageee
@suajosephine@besavageee I agree. I believe that concussions are not taken seriously enough especially in sports. It is extremely dangerous to have these players go back in the game when they're not fully recovered @besavageee#ucr150
The NCAA does not protect their athletes against sports-related concussions. There needs to be mandatory training for all coaches to identify symptoms early on, and a protocol to ensure that players don't play before they are fully recovered. @besavageee#ucr150

Title IX was passed in 1972 as a way to close the equity gap between men and women in education. It now serves as a way for women in sports to get the same access and opportunities as men.
@suajosephine@besavageee#UCR150@besavageee I agree that Title IX deserves more attention because there are still some discrepancies between woman's and men's sports, especially in the media.
@ccass015@besavageee I agree. Alot of student athletes rely on their parents to go over the NCI to make sure they know what they're signing. They are also given a very small timeframe to decide to sign the NCI which puts a lot of pressure on the student. #ucr150@besavageee
@TeresaOro007 @besavageee These students that are signing the NLI are so young and do not know what they are getting themselves into. It is extremely important that they get informed about the NLI before they sign because of how difficult it is to get out of it. #ucr150@besavageee
I found it very surprising that most athletic scholarships are distributed on a year-by-year basis. This makes it difficult for student-athletes to focus on academics because they have the added stress of losing their financial aid. #ucr150@besavageee
The NCAA has significant control over the students athletes and the eligibility of their scholarships. College athletes have to abide by the five year eligibility rule which means they only have 5 years to play four seasons. #ucr150@besavageee
@Adriana_Orozco7 @besavageee I agree. It is upsetting reading about how college athletes have to organize protests to try and get fair treatment, and the university only listens when a large loss of money is involved.#ucr150@besavageee
I support the need for college athletes to be fairly compensated. There is also the question of who is really protecting their physical and mental health when they are put in difficult positions in their sport?
