#Muslim_Community_and_Caste_Census

There is no caste in Islam. However, providing sub-caste details in the census is not against Islamic principles.

Recently, there has been considerable confusion within the Muslim community in Karnataka regarding the ongoing caste census. Many are asking: “Since there is no caste in Islam, how should we fill in the caste and sub-caste columns in the census?” The purpose of this article is to clear that confusion.

To address these doubts about mentioning religion, caste, and sub-caste in the caste census, SDPI Karnataka organized two round-table meetings at Urdu Hall, Hazrat Hamid Shah Complex, Bengaluru. Leaders of various organizations and political parties, retired KAS and other government officers, thinkers, journalists, lawyers, experts from religious, educational, social, industrial, medical, and judicial fields, activists, and community well-wishers all came together on one platform to discuss. A consensus emerged that the Muslim community must clearly state its identity in the census.

SDPI has resolved to take appropriate steps to ensure that every member of the community participates in the upcoming census with full awareness.

#Islamic_Principle
In Islam, there is no caste system. No one is superior or inferior to another. The fundamental principle is that all are equal before Allah.

However, for the purpose of identification, tribes/clans did exist. Even during the time of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), people were identified by their tribes, such as Quraysh, Ansar, Muhajirun, etc. This was only for recognition, not for superiority or inferiority.

#In_Simple_Terms
Caste system → Completely rejected (haram) in Islam.
Tribe/Clan identity → Only for recognition and mutual understanding within society.

As stated in the Qur’an and Hadith, superiority is based only on taqwa (piety) and good deeds — not on birth, lineage, or social status.

#Why_Does_the_Census_Ask_for_Caste_Details?
The purpose of the government’s caste census is not to question religious beliefs, but to understand the real social, educational, and economic conditions of communities:
✔️ To identify backward sections
✔️ To distribute reservations and welfare schemes fairly
✔️ To update the list of backward classes

#How_Should_Muslims_Fill_Caste_Details_in_the_Census?
Religion: Islam
Caste: Muslim
Sub-caste: Name of your community (e.g., Kasab, Nadaf, Pinjara, Qureshi, Dervesh, Beary, etc.)

This is only an administrative classification. It does not mean Islam accepts caste.

#Clarifying_Misconceptions
Mentioning a sub-caste name does not alter our religious belief. Islam has always rejected caste.

But if we refuse to provide details, weaker Muslim sections risk being excluded from government schemes and reservation benefits.

➡️ Census classification – only for policy and welfare purposes.
➡️ Providing accurate details protects our rights and ensures justice for the weaker sections.

There is no caste in Islam. However, giving sub-caste details in the census is not against Islamic principles. It is only an administrative process to protect our rights and ensure that we do not lose our due benefits.
