@restless_abyss@timgill924 The hardest working scholar activist in sociology today. If you’re working on a PhD consider a dissertation on the emancipatory potential of Gillian marginalia.
@timgill924 This entire convo is misguided; marginalia is actually the backbone of Western civilization, and we are approaching collapse precisely because not enough people are marking up library books
If you truly believe knowledge should be free then this is the most radically immediate action one can take. Punk scholar activist @timgill924 strikes a blow against the hegemony of ‘do nothing’ critical theory.
When I was in grad school, I underlined and made notes in nearly every library book (~500) I ever took out. I remember a cohort mate saying it was rude. I saw it as helpful to the next reader. Imagine a student right now encountering my notes. It’s like phoning a friend for help.
@timgill924 The Dialectic of Enlightenment was designed to increase the time spent in a social science PhD by at least 24 months, not counting the time wasted by less serious students at farmers’ markets.
@RevZekveld Nathan criticizing the secessionists is a way for Albertans to stand up for themselves. But what you call criticism the majority of Albertans may consider to be consequences.
Canada's role in taking firm action – often trailblazing – to ramp up pressure against Russia and in rallying allies across the Atlantic to support Ukraine is greatly appreciated by Ukrainians. Ultimately, this is what will help bring Russia's war to an end. Thank you, Mark, and all Canadians for your support and condolences.
Does populism threaten democracy?
Seems apt we ask this question today with international experts @MarcDFroese and @Furedibyte in the latest episode of The Bridge: A Disagreeing Well Podcast from @ucl and @TheUnionUCL

Let's say that the notion of Alberta Separation or Independence is exactly what some are saying it is. Foolish. Wrong-headed. Traitorous.
What are you going to do with all the God-fearing business and family men in the movement?
I am reminded here of a quote by CS Lewis.
“In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”
The way that most Canadians are handling this Movement speaks of hard days for every Canadian.
BREAKING - My response to the dumbass suggestion that Alberta Prosperity Project or Stayfree Alberta are “Russian”.
Keep in mind that all of this nonsense is coming from losers with Ukranian flags in their bios.
They obviously don’t want the gravy train interrupted by Alberta pulling its wealth out of Canada!
Jeff, you must have been terribly disappointed. 300k signatures looks like small potatoes. Seems our premier was prescient when she changed the rules to help your movement cross a lower bar.
BREAKING - CALGARY -
3 days since Mitch Sylvestre turned in 301,620 signatures to Elections Alberta and served a Statutory Declaration on Danielle Smith with no response from the Premier’s Office.
No public statement, no congratulatory note to Mitch Sylvestre - UCP Constituency Association President of the Year, no expression of gratitude for the 7,000 hard working Stay Free Alberta Canvassers or the 301,620 hard working Albertans who stood in lines into the dark Alberta January nights because Elections Alberta was so slow to issue canvasser badges…
Nothing from @ABDanielleSmith other than a surly silence as she jets off to Ottawa to meet with Mark Carney and receive secret briefings from CSIS as to how they are going to work against the people who voted her into office.
Her communications genius Matt Altheim must have worked overtime on THIS strategy.
BREAKING - NDP yammering about what “Separatist Leader Jeffrey Rath said” or didn’t say.
The point is this. 301,620 Albertans signed a lawful petition for a lawful constitutional question that complies with the Clarity Act.
Danielle Smith will ignore them and NOT put their question on a referendum ballot further to HER DISCRETION under S. 1. of the Referendum Act at her political peril regardless of any decision by Elections Alberta or the court.
Justice Feasby in fact confirmed that Premier Smith can legally call the question without a petition.
This is now on Premier Smith. She has been served with a Statutory Declaration attesting to the 301,620 Albertans who did what she asked and followed the law to deliver their wishes to her. They represent 17% of the voter turnout in the last election and in some constituencies over 90% of the UCP Vote in the last election.
Premier Smith - Albertans require you to do the right thing and call the question as you promised you would.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey R.W. Rath
