If I want to go & live in Spain w/o a job, we're required to show £30k in the bank & have private health cover.

And even now, the simple task of walking upstairs wipes me out.

And we're both constantly drained of energy, so much so that I recently installed CO1 detectors just in case the central heating's wonky.

Our borders have never been "open" in the sense you mean (we're not in Schengen) & if there has been a reluctance by successive UK govts to apply existing #EU controls on free movement, it's got nothing to do with the EU.
