Wiley Manuel, Class of 1949, born August 28, 1927, was the first African-American Justice of the California Supreme Court, appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown in 1977. An Oakland native, Manuel spent 23 years with the California Attorney General's office before becoming a judge.
