America turns 250 this Fourth of July—and patriotism will be on full display in every corner of the country.
But for some, that pride doesn't come easy.

In 2012, researchers achieved an extraordinary scientific milestone by regenerating a flowering plant from tissue that was approximately 32,000 years old, the oldest plant material ever brought back to life.
The plant, Silene stenophylla, is a small Arctic species whose seeds were discovered deep in Siberian permafrost near the Kolyma River. The material had been buried about 38 meters (124 feet) underground inside an Ice Age squirrel’s food cache. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the seeds dated back to a time when woolly mammoths still roamed the region.
Although many of the mature seeds were damaged, likely by the squirrel that originally stored them, some immature seeds retained viable tissue. Scientists carefully extracted this preserved tissue and cultivated it in sterile laboratory conditions. From this, they successfully regenerated complete, living plants.
The revived plants grew normally, produced flowers, and generated new seeds. While they were genetically very similar to modern Silene stenophylla, researchers observed subtle differences in flower structure, providing insight into how the species has changed over tens of thousands of years.
The seeds had remained frozen at around −7°C (19°F), a temperature low enough to prevent cellular breakdown and decay. Studying how this ancient tissue survived for millennia may help improve long-term seed preservation methods. Modern facilities such as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault depend on freezing techniques to safeguard global crop diversity. Discoveries like this suggest that permafrost may preserve not only climate records and ancient animal remains, but also viable biological material from ecosystems long past.

Putting out fires before they spread does not seem like a serious technological challenge in a world with @SpaceX, @xai and @anduriltech.
So @elonmusk and @PalmerLuckey, why don’t we start a company that uses satellites, AI, and drone technology to put out fires before they spread?
One can envision satellite monitoring, rapid drone investigation, and drone swarm water delivery. The number of drones sent to extinguish the fire and the nature of the extinguishing agent (water, foam, dry or wet chemicals etc) would be a function of the nature and scale of the fire. No human lives would be put a risk and there is no risk of DEI involvement in drone selection.
