"Everything/All art is political" is true in the same way that everything is psychological, everything is biological, everything is cultural, everything is cultural, everything is geographical, everything is phenomenological, everything is every "ical" you can think of because everything can be looked at through the lens of whatever field we're discussing

So when someone says "Everything/All art is political", the truest thing they can ever mean by that is "You can have a political conversation about anything", i.e. the Motte as shown below

Which is why, when pressed, they posit their (almost invariably retarded, which doesn't help) analyses of whatever is being discussed at the time as justification

So why not concede the point? The difference between "Everything/All art is political" and "You can have a political conversation about anything" seems negligible, right?

There's a reason why that phrase only ever appears outside of these purely theoretical arguments in situations where a politics obsessed agitator is trying to violate boundaries

Invariably the interaction goes:

A: *problematises and catastrophises over petty bullshit*
B: "Leave us alone"
A: "No, everything is political"

The point is to win a victory in a war of positions that you win by default if you're allowed to disengage

So they take away the element of choice by supplanting the true statement "You can have a political conversation about anything" with the (technically if we define it that way lmao) correct statement "Everything/All art is political"

That's why winning this purely linguistic victory is important

Nothing actually changes practically if we use the sound/string of symbols "political" to describe both x and y instead of just x and not y

But it opens the door for the exact kinds of problematising and political agitation that we've been enduring for at least two decades now, and forces engagement

Because if you're allowed to just go "No", for whatever reason, they lose all power and that terrifies them

tldr: Even granting the strongest reasonable interpretation of “everything is political,” it does not follow that everyone must discuss everything politically

“You can interpret this politically” does not mean “You are obligated to participate in that political interpretation”

“There are political implications to this” does not mean “Therefore political discussion is necessarily appropriate, let alone mandatory, here”

“Art exists within political/social structures” does not mean “Every artistic interaction should be treated as a political struggle”

And if you, reading this, believe that "All art is political" but you disagree with the idea that it is used as a coercive tactic (despite the obvious evidence) or if you personally do not use it as a coercive tactic, in order to retain the truthful essence of the phrase while not giving power to bad actors, you should switch to using the phrase "You can have a political conversation about anything"
