This is the right call at the right time. It may be late, but it is never too late. We all know that the Eritrean totalitarian regime is actively preparing for war against Ethiopia. Recently, protests were staged in the streets of Asmara, with demonstrators condemning events that took place 50 years ago—an obvious attempt to manipulate the Eritrean people and manufacture justification for another conflict. This is a clear warning sign of war, and it must be stopped before it escalates further.
We have seen this pattern before. In 2018, after the peace agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia, Isaias Afewerki told Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and I quote, “From now on, you will be the leader of both countries, and you will lead us into the future.” Not long after, the two leaders united to wage war and commit genocide against Tigray. However, when Abiy Ahmed later decided to end the war and signed the Pretoria Agreement to restore peace within Ethiopia, the Eritrean regime was not pleased. Isaias Afewerki made it clear through Eritrean national television that he had “unfinished business” with Ethiopia, revealing his true intentions.
This is what is happening now: the Eritrean totalitarian regime is thirsty for war, and it will not stop with Ethiopia. As long as Isaias Afewerki remains in power, there will be no peace in the Horn of Africa—whether it be Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, or beyond. His regime thrives on conflict and destruction, continuously destabilizing the region for its own survival. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this growing threat.
International leaders, especially those within Africa, must take a firm stand against this aggression before it spirals into a full-scale crisis. The people of Eritrea deserve peace, freedom, and a future without dictatorship. We are tired of the suffering imposed by this brutal regime. This must be stopped before the situation worsens. And we all know what must be done: the totalitarian rule of Eritrea must come to an end before it drags the region into chaos once again.
