When you find out Mormonism had its own Sunni-Shia style succession crisis:
Joseph Smith dies.
One side says authority passed to Brigham Young and the “apostles.”
That becomes today’s mainstream Mormons. (Majority, like Sunnis.)
Another side says no, the true succession line runs through Joseph Smith’s family, especially his son Joseph Smith III.
That becomes a movement called ‘Community of Christ’. (Minority, like Shia.)
So you basically get:
“Follow the prophet’s successors.”
vs.
“Follow the prophet’s household.”
Yet another Mormon-Islam parallel.
Everyone is talking about how bad the ideas in this Piketty proposal are, and it's true: They're very bad.
But what's also notable is how *out of date* they feel. A one-world government to fight climate change? Seriously? Even Greta Thunberg has moved on to Palestine activism.
Wilhelm was not a great monarch. The positive developments in Germany were due to trends and forces beyond him. Still, he was not the caricature that Entente propaganda depicted him as, nor the scarecrow of later historians (as portrayed by Röhl).
@CatholicInUtah Well, as any church historian will tell you, what we today recognise as the Roman Catholic Church emerged, at the earliest, with the tenure of Pope Gregory the Great, about 300 years after the Council of Nicaea, so this is a very strange statement to make.
@itsBrettG@tonyannett So the Nazis' desire for conquest in Eastern Europe forced Stalin to become a willing ally to Hitler, forced him to carve up Europe with Hitler and forced him to supply the Nazi war machine with an enormous amount of resources when it fought in the West?
@itsBrettG@tonyannett So they allied with the Nazi to carve up Europe instead. That is no stalling technique. Had the Soviet Union not allied with Hitler, the Second World War would never have started.
@itsBrettG@tonyannett Even better if the Soviet Union had never allied with Nazi Germany. Then we wouldn't have had the Second World War to begin with!
@tonyannett In 1917, Russia was still a poor country, but the vast majority of the peasants of Czarist Russia were not living in mud huts. The last decades of Tsarist rule were marked by explosive economic growth, which, among others, the Germans noted and were deeply worried about.
