When Robert Mugabe was President of Zimbabwe, he began a massive campaign of evicting white farmers and giving their farms, which they had built and lived on for generations, to black Zimbabweans. These evictions were mostly violent events, with hundreds of white farmers and their families murdered during the ordeals.

One of these farmers who were evicted at gunpoint with AK47s was Robert Smart and his family. Mugabe also evicted all the workers who worked on the farm.

For months the black workers and the entire community would be in touch with Robert Smart and his family, begging them to come back and fighting to reverse the injustice. White farmers weren’t evil oppressors. They were people who loved their communities and looked after the people in them. They would teach them and house them and pay them decent salaries. They were the heart and soul of the communities. But importantly they were also the only people skilled in farming and nurturing the land.

Within a month of the new President taking over, he reversed the eviction and returned Robert Smart and his family to their farm. The entire community was there to greet them with tears of Joy and celebration. They were welcomed with hugs and emotion by everyone.

The video below tells the story. A few other farmers also got their land and communities back. Many didn’t. And many died during the attacks. But the story of Robert Smart is a blessing and a message of hope for unity in a country torn by racism and hatred.

Let this story in Zimbabwe be a lesson to the South African government. The white farmers evicted and killed in South Africa weren’t butchers. They were the rocks that kept the communities together. They lived side by side the black people and loved them and looked after them.

While Zimbabwe is starting to take the path of reconciliation and unity, albeit slowly, the future for all its people, black, white and other, looks brighter. We can only hope that South Africa may learn from this and choose a different path than the one they are on. The entire point of removing apartheid is to bring all the people together, not to reverse the apartheid and target one race only. Because then you are no different to what you fought so hard to remove.
