In the future, the best use case for wind and solar will be to pair such generation facilities with a methane-burning powerplant, which captures the exhaust gases. If you burn methane (CH4), you get one molecule of CO2, and 2 molecules of H20. That process can be run in reverse, turning CO2 and H20 into CH4 plus O2, by adding energy back. The problem at the moment is that this process uses more energy than it harvests economically, and the key to making that work is to develop the right catalysts to make that conversion more economical. Once you "manufacture" methane, you can then burn it again in your powerplant in lieu of using batteries or other storage like pumped hydropower.
