Messages of support were shared with participating learners at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, with Executive Director Mr Parthy Chetty encouraging learners to remain curious, innovative and committed to their scientific interests. He commended learners, teachers and parents for their dedication and support in nurturing young talent and developing the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Deputy Director for Information and Communications Technology, Ms Boitumelo Butjie, also encouraged learners to believe in their abilities, persevere and strive for excellence. She emphasised the importance of innovation, continuous learning and embracing growth opportunities, reminding learners that determination, hard work and confidence are key to turning ideas and aspirations into meaningful achievements.

Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, delivers a message of support, highlighting the importance of investing in the whole child and ensuring that learners have the support and opportunities they need to thrive.

She emphasises the need for stronger psychosocial support, mentorship and career guidance, particularly in rural and under-resourced communities where learners face challenges such as poverty, violence, anxiety, grief and limited exposure to career opportunities.

Dr Mhaule welcomes the Foundation’s school-based intervention at Hlalakahle High School in Vaalbank, Mpumalanga, noting the importance of ensuring that a learner’s circumstances or geographical location do not limit their future opportunities.

She further calls for stronger collaboration between government, schools, business, civil society and other stakeholders to create meaningful and sustainable opportunities for young people.

[Eskom Expo for Young Scientists @Exposcience]

A 40-year legacy of discovering and developing young scientific talent was celebrated at the Eskom Expo Welkom Regional Science Fair, marking four decades since the region began providing learners with a platform to question, investigate and turn their ideas into scientific research.

Hosted at Central University of Technology (CUT), Welkom on 15 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 129 projects, including group projects, presented by 157 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Social Sciences, which attracted 33 entries, followed by Engineering (30) and Plant Sciences (19).

Violence affects a large proportion of children in South Africa and globally and remains one of the fundamental barriers to national development and the reduction of inequality. A recent national prevalence survey indicates that around one in three children experience violence during their childhood.

With the advent of digital technology, children face increased vulnerability as online risks can cross borders and reach children in spaces traditionally regarded as safe havens, including their homes. Children are increasingly exposed to online sexual abuse, cyberbullying, paedophilia and human trafficking.

Against this background, the Department of Basic Education’s School Safety Directorate is conducting Online Safety Integrated Workshop at KwaDlangezwa High School in the King Cetshwayo District, KwaZulu-Natal.

Mrs Koki Selepe, Deputy Director: Science Promotion at DSTI, opened the five-day Coding and Robotics Workshop for Senior Phase, highlighting the importance of equipping educators with knowledge and information that complement and strengthen the curriculum.

She explained that the training is designed to build educator’s capacity so they can confidently apply what they learn in their teaching and share their knowledge with fellow educators. She encouraged participants to actively engage with the programme, reflect on their learning and provide feedback to help shape future training.
