More than 3 million Syrians - refugees, displaced - may decide to return home this year.

Leaving them without support would be disastrous.

Without housing, electricity, water, work, security, returns will stop. People will move again...

For a number of years, @UNHCRinSYRIA has supported 122 community centres across Syria, which provide vital services to vulnerable Syrians, including returning refugees.

As a result of the funding crisis we are currently facing, many of these centers will be closing in the next few months.

Many children will no longer benefit from life-saving mine awareness. Many women will stop receiving legal support to ensure they can exercise their basic rights. Much of the help to ensure families can access critical civil documentation will stop. Transport assistance to assist Syrians return home will be severely reduced.

Following the fall of the Assad regime, more and more Syrian refugees are asking for our help to finally voluntarily return to Syria. There is still a window - although a fast-narrowing one - for us to respond to that call. But this will require donors stepping up, and very quickly so.

Many Syrians are spending their first Eid in years in their homeland.

This is a moment of hope.

Many of those who were in exile reunite with their loved ones. They enjoy family reunions and traditions at home. 

But they also face huge needs as they go back to destroyed or damaged homes in a country ravaged by war.

I hope that Eid will bring solidarity and compassion with refugees who are finally able to be back at home.  

They need the support of the international community to rebuild their lives.   

Together with @UNHCRinSyria teams we will continue to help those who return home but we need the support of our donors by our side.

16.7 million Syrians rely on humanitarian aid. Half are children.

Hospitals are in ruins. Medecines are scarce. Electricity is a luxury. People are also facing the deadly threats of landmines. Millions of children are out of school. An entire generation is at risk.

But there is hope in solidarity and new opportunities.

The @UN and partners are on the ground, delivering life saving aid, but there is so much more to be done.

The people of Syria cannot be left alone.

Early recovery and reconstruction are essential to break the cycle of crisis.

We are at a turning point. Together we can restore hope. Syria needs your support.

Today, the Brussels Conference on Syria organized by the European Union will be the key moment for donors to make concrete commitments towards humanitarian and recovery activities. 

We now have a unique opportunity to help Syrians rebuild their lives and we should seize it.
