When we look back on this period in American history, I think we will see it for what it was:

An era of incompetence dressed up with a cheap sheen of bravado, deception, and propaganda — believed only by sycophants, opportunists, and people who chose not to look too closely.

From the botched management of COVID, to the minimizing and deflecting of serious misconduct and sex-crime allegations, to reckless foreign-policy failures, to cosmetic “fixes” that solved none of the actual infrastructure problems, the pattern has been obvious: appearances over results, loyalty over competence, messaging over accountability.

For those who wore the red hat, or who advanced their career, wealth, influence, or status through the opportunism of this period, I think a day of reckoning is coming.

Maybe not today. Maybe not this year. But eventually.

You thought a transactional businessman would fix things. You thought he would cut through the political quagmire. You thought disruption by itself was the same thing as reform.

But what you supported — and in some cases helped enable — was the degradation of America’s standing in the world, the weakening of our institutions, the erosion of truth, and the poisoning of our society.

Look at Russia today: a system that runs on bribery, corruption, loyalty, intimidation, and fear. No, America is not Russia. But we have taken a real step in that direction.

And along the way, we have compromised basic human values.

We have watched people who preach faith defend behavior that looks nothing like the teachings of Jesus. We have watched public cruelty become entertainment. We have watched corruption get rebranded as strength.

The people who enabled this may not feel embarrassed yet. They still have money. They still have platforms. They still have Fox News. They still have access to power.

But history has a way of catching up.

The only silver lining is that most Americans — and much of the world — can now see the worst of us more clearly. They can see who actively contributed to the degradation of our society. They can also see the people who pretended not to notice because it was convenient.

And that brings us to the business leaders.

The ones who know better.

The ones who understand exactly what corruption looks like, but still choose to play along because access is profitable.

The message is not subtle: support me and you get the contract. Praise me and you get protection. Bend the knee and you get rewarded.

That is not capitalism. That is not democracy. That is not patriotism.

That is the language of bribery, favoritism, and authoritarian decay.

So the question should be asked of every business leader who has chosen accommodation over principle:

Do you want the United States to become more like Russia?

Is that acceptable to you?

Is it acceptable for political power to be used as a tool of intimidation, reward, punishment, and personal enrichment?

Is it acceptable for public officials to threaten, demean, or humiliate political opponents and still be treated as normal partners in commerce and governance?

At some point, neutrality becomes complicity.

And history will remember who spoke up, who stayed silent, and who decided the money was worth the moral cost.
