A Connecticut mother is suing the federal government after masked, armed ICE agents surrounded her vehicle while she was taking her children to school, removed and handcuffed her without displaying a warrant, and abducted her without properly confirming that the children had a caretaker.

Nancy Martinez was deported to Mexico and her children (American citizens, ages 8 and 13) remained in New Haven without their mother.

According to the complaint, her daughter has assumed substantial responsibility for her younger brother, who has developmental disabilities, and both children have experienced continuing psychological and educational harm.

The allegations in this lawsuit are appalling.

None of us are safer because of this cruelty.

Separating families and traumatizing children is disgusting. I'm glad she's suing and standing up for her family because if these fascists get away with doing this to immigrants, you better believe they're gonna come for US citizens next.

These fascist experiments brutalizing immigrants are meant to test the waters of what they can get away with. If Americans don't stand up against this, it'll be the Japanese internment camps all over again, but for suspected political dissidents, and for anyone who dares to criticize the rich and powerful.

Supporting this behavior while pretending you're a "patriot" or that you're "protecting kids" are characteristics of a very violent and manipulative psychopathy that should never be normalized.

How can any true, God-fearing, Christian conservatives ever support something that is so incongruent to their faith? It's so messed up.

WE NEED A NEW FOREIGN POLICY.

Amidst the fiasco of the war in Iran, Americans need to rethink the very foundations of our foreign policy and how we go forward in a very different direction — a direction which focuses on peace, democracy and economic and social justice.

Let us not forget:

The war in Vietnam was based on a lie. In that war over 58,000 Americans died, hundreds of thousands were wounded and millions of Vietnamese civilians lost their lives.

The war in Iraq was based on a lie. In that war 4,492 Americans died, tens of thousands were wounded and hundreds of thousands Iraqi civilians lost their lives.

The current war in Iran was based on a lie. In this war 14 Americans have been killed, hundreds have been wounded and up to ten thousand civilians in the region have lost their lives.

Meanwhile, with 60% of our people living paycheck to paycheck, we have a military budget of over one trillion dollars — much of it going to the extremely profitable military-industrial complex.

In terms of the Middle East, here are our major allies:

Israel: a nation, now controlled by right-wing extremists, which has committed genocide in Gaza, plotted with Trump to start the illegal and unconstitutional war in Iran, and is now actively obstructing a meaningful pathway towards peace as it continues to attack Lebanon’s civilian population.

Saudi Arabia: a nation controlled by the wealthiest family in the world who run a dictatorship that treats women as third-class citizens and tolerates no opposition or dissent. According to U.S. intelligence, the Saudi leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had American journalist Jamal Khashoggi murdered in its Istanbul consulate because of his criticism of the regime.

UAE: a nation which is an authoritarian monarchy with no free press, no free elections and no independent civil society — built on the labor of migrant workers who make up 80% of its population. Beyond its borders, the UAE has armed the Rapid Support Forces — a paramilitary group the United States government has formally determined is committing genocide in Sudan.

Qatar: a nation which is also an authoritarian monarchy controlled by the Al Thani family, one of the most powerful and wealthy royal families in the world. Unbelievably, 91% of Qatar’s population is migrant labor who are ruthlessly oppressed. While building World Cup stadiums in Qatar, thousands of workers died as a result of horrendous working conditions.

The politics of the Middle East are complicated, and no one believes that we can bring peace, prosperity and democracy to the region tomorrow. But clearly, we need a very different approach than what we have right now.

We need a foreign policy that actually reflects our values and which must start with a simple premise: the United States will not provide weapons and diplomatic cover to governments — whether in Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi or Doha — that engage in systematic human rights violations.

And it means, at long last, building a foreign policy centered around human rights, respect for international law and multilateralism — and one that holds war criminals accountable no matter whom they may be.

I cannot believe Cape Verde actually convinced this guy to play for them via LinkedIn😭. Monster of a defender.

His mother is Irish, his father is from Cape Verde. He was born and raised in Ireland, and currently the captain of Shamrock Rovers.

He represented Ireland at youth level before switching to Cape Verde.

In 2018, Cape Verde were looking for professional footballers with Cape Verdian heritage and the coach came across Pico Lopes.

He messaged him on LinkedIn to play for them, Lopes was working part time as a Mortgage advisor in a bank then and still playing professional football.

He didn’t respond because the message was in Portuguese and he didn’t understand, he thought it was a spam.

A year later (2019), the coach messaged him again, this time he did it in English. Lopes agreed to play for Cape Verde and the rest is history.

“Desconexión cognitiva” (o doble estándar) es cuando una persona critica algo en otros, pero no se da cuenta (o ignora) que su propio país o situación tiene un problema o realidad muy parecida.

Un ejemplo claro:

Un colombiano me escribe en X:
“¿En serio? ¿Y por qué China es el mayor consumidor de carbón?”

Lo que dice: Critica a China por usar mucho carbón.
Lo que ignora: Colombia es un país exportador de carbón.

Durante muchos años Colombia ha vendido carbón al mundo (incluyendo a China en algunos periodos), y ese carbón genera empleo, impuestos y dólares para Colombia.

→ Es como si alguien te criticara por comer mucha carne, mientras él mismo es ganadero y vive de vender carne.

Hace 80 años, el viernes 21 de junio de 1946, en los estudios CMQ de La Habana, Cuba, Arsenio Rodríguez y su conjunto registraron para RCA Víctor dos piezas fundamentales de su repertorio: ‘Dame un Cachito pa’ Huelé’ y ‘El Reloj de Pastora’. Estas dos obras de Arsenio fueron llevadas al disco por primera vez ese día, bajo las matrices CU 1433 y CU 1434.

Aquella jornada no solo dejó dos clásicos del son montuno, también marcó el debut discográfico de figuras esenciales en el sonido de Arsenio, me refiero al pianista y arreglista Luis ‘Lilí’ Martínez y al trompetista Serafín Terry ‘Mapi’, recordado por su inspirado solo en ‘Dame un Cachito pa’ Huelé’. Con René Álvarez como cantante principal, Arsenio en el tres, Félix ‘Chocolate’ Alfonso en la tumbadora y Antolín Suárez ‘Papa Kila’ en el bongó, aquella sesión reunió a una constelación de músicos y es considerada fundamental en la discografía de Arsenio, pues consolidó el formato de ‘conjunto’ que revolucionó la música cubana.

Pico Lopes, uno de los referentes de Cabo Verde, trabajaba en el banco de la República de Irlanda. Oficina, Teams, LinkedIn. En sus tiempos libres, como muchos de nosotros, jugaba fútbol. Él lo hacía para el Bohemians en sus tiempos libres. Pero en 2017, el club Shamrock Rovers lo vio y le dijo: ¿por qué no te dedicas al fútbol, eres un buen defensor? Y dijo que sí.

Dos años después, Lopes recibió un mensaje extraño en portugués en LinkedIn, lo ignoró, debía ser spam. Pero 9 meses después esa misma persona le escribió y Lopes decidió traducirlo en Google: “Hola Roberto, ¿has tenido la oportunidad de pensar lo que te dije?”.

Era Rui Aguas, DT de Cabo Verde, quien estaba en proceso de scouting y descubrió que el papá de Lopes era de Cabo Verde. El país africano más pequeño en jugar un Mundial tiene apenas 600.000 habitantes y mirar en otros lados es una necesidad. Lopes aceptó, y hoy, gracias a una cuenta de LinkedIn desactualizada, con un puesto administrativo en un banco, lo tiene disputando el Mundial histórico de Cabo Verde.
