Luxembourg’s international investment position (assets) grew rapidly from the early 2000s through 2018, rising at an annual rate of 13.2% from $2.11 trillion in 2013 to $13.56 trillion in 2018. Since then, growth has nearly stalled, averaging just 0.34% annually, with assets reaching $13.88 trillion in Q1 2025. Between 2018 and 2025, direct investment declined, while portfolio investment expanded—particularly in equities, investment fund shares, and financial derivatives—driven by global stock market gains. As of Q1 2025, portfolio investment stood at $6.48 trillion (46.6% of total assets), while direct investment amounted to $5.38 trillion (38.7%).
