Unofficial damage:
- +4° in Lafayette is their coldest morning on record back to the 1890s.
- Baton Rouge and Lake Charles are having their coldest morning since the great freeze of 1899.
- It’s Beaumont’s coldest morning since 1906.
I’m still in disbelief this happened. Here it is. Timelapse of historic New Orleans snow storm. Snow got up to 12 inches on my snowboard in the French Quarter.
No...this isn't somewhere up north! This is Lafayette, Louisiana, getting near blizzard conditions as they are under a Blizzard Warning! Baton Rouge NOT under that warning, but still a Winter Storm Warning. 4-8 inches expected. https://t.co/At5R7ie6se
It's easy to forget given how dry the last month plus has been, but Washington DC had its 2nd-longest streak of days with measurable rain (11) immediately before its now-record streak of days without measurable rain, which finally ended yesterday after 38 days.
ICYMI, Phoenix ended an incredible 21-day streak of record highs which included topping the former October monthly record (107°) each of the first 8 day of the month. It's notable that on most days the records were beaten by more than 1-2°--records were beaten by 5°+ 8 times.
Atlanta received the highest 48-hour rainfall on record over the past 2 days. 11.12 inches of rain soaked the area, beating out the previous record of 9.59 inches in 48 hours in 1886. Record keeping stretches back to 1878. #gawx#helene2024

Here is a comparison of the wind fields of 2018's Category 5 Hurricane Michael (left) vs. Cat 4 Helene (right) at landfall. While Michael's maximum sustained winds were stronger (160 mph vs. 140), Helene's wind field was much larger (TS winds 310 miles from center vs. 175).
As of the latest update, hurricane force winds extend 60 mi from center and tropical storm force winds are 345 mi from center. At landfall, Michael's hurricane/tropical storm wind radii were 45/175 mi and Idalia's were 25/175.
#Helene is a reminder that the Saffir-Simpson scale does not tell the whole story about a storm. This map shows the wind fields of Hurricanes Michael and Idalia at landfall vs. Helene. While those storms had higher peak winds (so far), Helene has a much larger wind field.
Phoenix has now had seven straight 110°+ highs. This has happened many times before during the summer months, but this is the first time on record with more than 4 consecutive in Sept. Meanwhile, the city's record shattering streak of 100°+ highs should finally end this weekend.
Per @NOAANCEI Summer 2024 was the 4th-hottest summer on record nationally since 1895 and hottest on record in CA, AZ, FL, NH, and ME. It yielded the 2nd-highest population-weighted CDD total (1053) in our database since 1950, exceeded only by Summer 2022 (1056).
