A western mainstream reporter’s Hong Kong visa renewal request has been rejected—and the New York Times and other western mainstream journalists are making it a “press freedom” issue.

Rebecca Choong Wilkins of Bloomberg spent six years in the city and failed to get another visa extension.

“Regrettably, this decision and the lack of explanation reinforces widespread concerns about the erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong,” the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong said in a statement.

Lack of explanation? Well, okay, but of course NO immigration services anywhere provide explanations on individual cases, including western ones .

HONG KONG HAS PRESS FREEDOM
As for “erosion of press freedom” in Hong Kong, well you can go to news or discussion websites any day of the week and find plentiful criticism of the Hong Kong government.

Western journalists visit Hong Kong on work trips all the time, and write what they like—which is not true of Hong Kong or other Chinese journalists visiting the west. But I’ll say more about that in a minute.

The one Hong Kong article Ms Choong Wilkins wrote which stuck in my mind was one with a shock headline saying “HK public consultation lists Facebook, YouTube ban”. It was published worldwide in March 2024.

You can imagine the consternation this caused. What?! Hong Koong is discussing banning Facebook and YouTube? Shocking news.

IT WASN'T TRUE
But it simply wasn’t true. The government never considered that for a second. What happened was that there was a public consultation, and, among a vast number of notes from the public, some rando suggested it.

Could even have been a Bloomberg staff member.

And that’s all it was. To take one comment from an identified member of the public and make it into a big story implying that the Hong Kong government was thinking of banning Facebook and YouTube was just wrong. It was misleading. It was deceptive.

FOLLOW UP
After Hong Kong people complained, the same reporter wrote a follow-up article which admitted that a ban was a suggestion from the public and added “authorities stopped short of endorsing that view” –

Stopped short. As if the authorities were almost ready to do that but at the last moment stopped short.

No. They didn’t stop short. There is literally no evidence that they ever considered it for a moment.

But I’m glad the FCC has an interest in cases of journalists failing to get visas renewed, because I have been following such cases.

CASES WHICH DON'T GET THE HEADLINES
- Did you know Australia canceled visas and expelled four journalists and two academics in 2020? All just happened to be Chinese. Did you hear about that?

- Did you know Washington cut visas for all Chinese journalists to 90 days max and stopped approving all visa renewals for Chinese journalists from may 2020? Hear about that?

- Did you know the UK canceled visas and ejected at least three Chinese journalists the same year? There was barely any coverage except for a piece in the Daily Telegraph saying the reporters must have been spies; they were Chinese after all.

- Did you know Canada blocked nine journalists travelling from New York and Washington to cover their 2018 G7 summit? All nine were of Chinese background. Non-Chinese journalists were allowed in.

- Did you know the US in 2021 crushed a plan for a Chinese community newspaper among Hong Kong and mainland immigrants in America by declaring it a “foreign agents” operation?

I knew some of the people involved and the allegations were just ridiculous. They were all good people, either Americans or Hong Kongers.

I could provide more examples.

But instead I'll just ask a question:

How come you haven't heard about any of these cases?

But if a western journalist fails to get a visa renewal, you will hear about it, and so will the world.
